Michigan vs UConn College Basketball Preview
Michigan Basketball
There will be parts of Michigan basketball that look an awful lot like last season's defending national champions did. That's specifically true in the backcourt, where Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney make up one of the best duos the sport has to offer.
Add Roddy Gayle Jr. into it, and Michigan will start three players who closed the game against UConn when confetti started falling in the national title game last April.
But there's a lot more that will feel brand new for Michigan. Replacing three lottery picks in one frontcourt is as hard as it sounds.
Moustapha Thiam replaces Aday Mara theoretically, but the talented Cincinnati transfer floats to the perimeter too often and still has a lot to prove in the physicality department.
Thiam missed Michigan's opener, and his status is unknown coming into this game. J.P. Estrella will try to help in Morez Johnson Jr.'s old role, but Estrella hasn't looked fully comfortable playing more on the perimeter offensively.
Undeniably though, Michigan's biggest loss will be felt on the sidelines. Dusty May built most of this roster, but his magic fairy dust went with him to Dallas, leaving Mike Boynton to pick up the pieces.
He did as good of a job at player retention in mid-June as anyone could have hoped, but this will be quite a test for Boynton against the best X's and O's coach in all of college basketball.
Michigan will need star performances from all of its starters, and it'll have to avoid foul trouble too.
Michigan doesn't project as a deep team this season, with the loss of projected starter Brandon McCoy Jr. for the season. The deeper into the bench this game goes, the more the advantage belongs to UConn.
UConn Basketball
Call me crazy, but this may be the best roster Dan Hurley has built at UConn yet. There's no 7-foot-2 Donovan Clingan erasing everything at the rim, but there are plus athletes and NBA skillsets everywhere you look.
In the backcourt, Silas Demary Jr. and Braylon Mullins both possess first-team All-American upside. Demary, who was hobbled in the National Championship game and seeking revenge, is particularly a nightmare matchup for Cadeau physically.
Mullins turned down being a mid-first round pick in the NBA draft for more ruthless winning.
But UConn's true game wrecker is a name that will be new to college fans this season: freshman wing Colben Landrew. Landrew is built like a linebacker and can guard all five positions. He's a singular defensive force, the likes of which UConn hasn't had on the perimeter since Stephon Castle.
The swing piece for the Huskies is their five-man, Najai Hines. Hines is a physical specimen and a freak shot blocker, but he has to avoid foul trouble.
Oskar Giltay backs him up and is serviceable, but there's no question that Hines staying on the court is the key to UConn hitting its ceiling. Hines is particularly a tough matchup for Thiam, who has a tendency to get pushed off the block by stronger bigs.
UConn can survive foul trouble anywhere else. Between Nik Khamenia, Jayden Ross, Junior County and more on the deep bench, at times, this roster feels like it has two of everything.
Michigan vs. UConn Pick, Betting Analysis
Michigan will go as its guards go this season, and it's hard to dream up a more difficult matchup for Cadeau and McKenney than this UConn perimeter defense.
If Hines can avoid foul trouble, he'll bother the new-look Michigan frontcourt.
The deeper into the bench this game goes for either side, the larger UConn's talent advantage will show.
And if Thiam isn't at full strength, this could get ugly.
Expect Hurley to get his revenge, with some style points this time.
Pick: UConn -5.5 (Play to -8)
