North Florida Basketball

North Florida might want to rethink its scheduling strategy for non-conference opponents.

The Ospreys have just two wins this season, against New College of Florida and Trinity Baptist. The remaining schedule has led them to eight losses, with no wins against a Division I opponent.

They haven't done themselves any favors by playing actual road games at Florida, Tennessee, Gonzaga, and Dayton.

As expected, they’ve struggled and rank last in offensive rebounding percentage. They also rank 350th or worse in turnovers, offensive rebounding and free throw attempts relative to field goal attempts.

A meeting against Charleston Southern may help them, considering the Bucs are 361st in creating turnovers.

While struggling to avoid turnovers offensively, they also rank outside the top 300 in defensive turnovers created.

While the Ospreys have quite a few deficiencies, they do have a capable scoring threat in senior guard Kamrin Oriol. He averages 17.5 points and 4.4 assists per game, and shoots 43% from long range.

The long ball has been their biggest plus, because they hit 3s at a decent rate and don't allow a high percentage on defense (21st in opponent 3-point field goal percentage). That's impressive when you consider the slew of top-ranked opponents they've faced in hostile environments.

Charleston Southern has the far prettier record, sitting at 7-5. The Ospreys rank 11th in strength of schedule, and the Buccaneers rank 336th. Two of their seven wins have been against non-Division I opponents.

Their metrics will also show plenty of advantages, such as ranking in the top 51 in 3-point percentage, 2-point percentage and effective field goal percentage.

The most significant discrepancy on paper is the rebounding edge. They're afforded extra possessions because they secure offensive rebounds. They also live and die by the 3, ranking 10th in percentage of points from deep.

North Florida vs. Charleston Southern Betting Analysis

On paper, Charleston Southern should run away with this. However, its best offensive strength is this Ospreys' defense.

We can also lean on the fact that North Florida is extremely well tested, and that experience may help it in the coming weeks as its opponent takes a sharp dropoff.

I’m seeing a lot of 10.5s, and it’s where I'll lay my confidence.

My Pick: North Florida +10.5 (Play to +8.5)
