Colorado vs San Diego State College Basketball Preview
Colorado Basketball
Colorado began its year by crushing Abilene Christian, 94-59. That’s a great sight for veteran HC Tad Boyle, as most of last year's team hit the transfer portal.
The one key cog who stayed is Barrington Hargress, a 6-1 guard who averaged 14.5 ppg last year. Hargress had just 11 points in his season debut. He'll need to put on his Superman cape and score more in this matchup.
Of the other four starters, three are returning players, but none started in 2025. The best of the bunch is Jalin Holland, who scored 18 points and six rebounds in his season debut. Ian Inman is the best shooter of the trio, and Josiah Sanders scored 14 against Abilene Christian.
Big-man play is my biggest question for Colorado. The Buffs are starting NDSU transfer Noah Feddersen, who averaged nine ppg and five rpg for the Bison. He's not a reliable shooter, and he'll struggle against SDSU's physical bigs. Feddersen is Boyle's best option, but Eric Jacobsen and Goc Malual will likely fill bench minutes.
San Diego State Basketball
You can lock Brian Dutcher in for 20+ wins every season. In fact, the Aztecs won 22+ games in all of Dutcher's seasons as HC, dating back to 2018.
This isn't the same SDSU team, though. Dutcher adjusted his style, which very few coaches would do after winning 20+ games every season. The Aztecs began playing faster last year, jumping from 245th in adjusted tempo to 104th. Still, it ranked just 99th in offensive efficiency. A faster offense doesn't always mean a better offense.
This year, I am optimistic about SDSU being a good offense. It scored 102 points on 1.25 ppp in the season-opening win over Cal State Fullerton.
Dutcher did a great job building up his backcourt. He let Latrell Davis redshirt last year, and he was a scoring dynamo in his debut, scoring 25 points. He pairs nicely with the playmaking from Elzie Harrington and Chance Gladden, who combined for 12 assists.
Another name to watch? Oregon State transfer Isaiah Sy. He stepped in and got his shots up, but he's 6-6 with ball skills and shooting. That's a valuable piece off the Aztecs' bench.
The biggest advantage SDSU has is in the frontcourt. Jeremiah "Bear" Cherry is an imposing force at the five with his 6-10, 270-pound frame. Fedderson is about 35 pounds lighter than Cherry, so consider that an advantage for SDSU.
Cherry's interior partner is Tae Simmons, one of the best glue guys in the Pac-12. Simmons is a terrific rebounder, recording 3.4 rpg in 14 mpg last year and he grabbed 11 in his season debut. He made key plays in a bench role, and now he could average a double-double in a starting role. Similar to Cherry, I don't know who on Colorado can defend the physical play of Simmons.
Colorado vs. San Diego State Pick, Betting Analysis
Although SDSU struggled defensively against Cal State Fullerton, I expect Dutcher to get them on track. It's not a lack of talent thing; it's that Fullerton plays fast and SDSU just wasn't locked in on that end. Dutcher, being the defensive tactician that he is, I expect them to bounce back.
Give me SDSU.
Pick: SDSU -2.5 (play to -4)
