Santa Clara vs Gonzaga College Basketball Betting Preview

Gonzaga and Santa Clara take center stage for the WCC title game in what should be a fun one on Tuesday night.

For the Zags, incredibly, this will mark their 29th consecutive trip to the WCC Championship game, going back to 1998. Talk about a remarkable run of dominance for Mark Few and company.

Meanwhile, for the Broncos, while nothing is guaranteed, Monday night’s dramatic win over St. Mary’s all but locked up an NCAA Tournament bid regardless of what happens in the title game.

Obviously, Santa Clara wants to remove all doubt, win the WCC Championship, and hang a banner, taking the auto bid in the process. Santa Clara would be the fourth different school Herb Sendek has guided to the NCAA Tournament.

This line has opened with Gonzaga sitting around a 6.5-point favorite.

The two met twice in the regular season, with the Bulldogs taking both, but each was a competitive affair.

I expect Sendek’s team to come out with a “house money” type of vibe in this one, after pulling out a nervy game last night against Mary’s, in which they likely knew their NCAA Tournament status could be on the line. Now is the time to let it rip and go for a league title.

Santa Clara is an elite offensive outfit, ranking 21st nationally in KenPom’s adjOE, and when you watch them live or on tape, it’s very rare to find a possession that doesn’t result in a quality shot.

To hang with Gonzaga, you’ve got to be able to really score the basketball, and the Broncos have the firepower to do that. They went for 77 and 86 in the two prior meetings.

On the other end of the floor, Gonzaga is obviously a load to deal with and will have plenty of advantages, starting with Graham Ike in the paint. Santa Clara needs to do a better job defensively and must also limit second-chance opportunities for the Zags.

Another factor working in the Broncos’ favor is that this is not one of the crazy-fast Gonzaga teams we’ve seen in recent memory. This group under Mark Few plays at a little bit slower tempo, which should make it easier for Santa Clara to keep it nip and tuck throughout.

Santa Clara vs. Gonzaga Betting Analysis

I think the third matchup between these two will end up being the most competitive of them all, and I like the Broncos with the points in this one.

Ultimately, Gonzaga is rightfully favored and will likely cut down the nets yet again, but my gut tells me the Broncos play a great game and are right there late.

Give me Santa Clara with the points.

My Pick: Santa Clara +7.5
