Tennessee Tech vs. Lipscomb College Basketball Betting Preview

Tennessee Tech Basketball

Tennessee Tech looks like one of the worst teams in college hoops. The Golden Eagles took beatings from Georgia and Kentucky by 40+ points in both games. They also allowed more than 1.40 PPP in each contest.

Of course, they aren’t playing an SEC squad this time around, but those are very discouraging final scores.

In this matchup, Tennessee Tech could have a real issue with the pressure Lipscomb brings on defense. It turns the ball over at a 20.9% clip, and that’ll allow Lipscomb to get into an offensive groove. Plus, Tennessee Tech allows opponents to shoot 41% from deep — one of the worst marks in America.

Offensively, I have some major concerns about Tennessee Tech. The Golden Eagles can’t shoot it from deep, connecting on just 26% of their shots from bonus range.

They rank 324th in offensive efficiency and don't do anything very well. Shooting from inside the arc is the best option for this offense, as they're hitting 52.7% from 2. Everything else is a complete train wreck.

Coach John Pelphrey needs to establish his big men early and often. Dani Pounds and JaJuan Nicholls are two of Tennessee Tech’s top three scorers. If they slow the game down and feed those two, it would be a big boost for the Golden Eagles.

Lipscomb Basketball

Many, including myself, expected Lipscomb to fall off once Lennie Acuff departed for Samford. That was a miss, as former Division II coaching standout Kevin Carroll has the Bisons in the running to win the ASUN again.

Lipscomb is on a three-game winning streak, with each victory coming by 12 points or more, including a 23-point drubbing over a good Marshall team.

On the offensive end, Coach Carroll wants his team to let it fly from beyond the arc. They attempt 3s on 50.1% of their field goal attempts, converting at a 34.7% clip. The Bisons also have exceptional ball movement, assisting on 66.8% of their made field goals.

Point guard Mateo Esmeraldo has been the catalyst for the superb ball movement. The transfer from the non-Division I level has tallied five-plus assists in six of his seven games at Lipscomb.

Lipscomb plays a 10-man deep rotation, and everyone contributes. Six players average between eight and 13 points per game, with 6-foot-11 center Grant Asman leading the team in scoring and rebounding.

Carroll has brought a very different defensive approach to Nashville. Lipscomb is pressuring more and forcing turnovers at a 20% clip.

On the flip side, the Bison allow opponents to shoot 56.8% from inside the arc (295th nationally).

I’m buying stock in Lipscomb sustaining this success under Carroll. The Bisons have a defined style of play on both ends of the floor, and the talent is good enough to battle near the top of the ASUN.

That said, shooting variance could derail Lipscomb in certain spots. I don’t know if there’s enough offensive production outside of the Bisons' shooting to survive an off night.

Tennessee Tech vs. Lipscomb Betting Analysis

I can’t see this one staying very competitive.

I’m buying into Lipscomb, while being totally out on Tennessee Tech.

That squad offers very few redeeming qualities that would make me want to bet on it.

We've also seen Lipscomb totally blow out opponents, and Tennessee Tech has shown it can be blown out on a number of occasions.

My Pick: Lipscomb -10.5
