Texas Tech vs BYU College Basketball Betting Preview

Texas Tech Basketball

BYU and Texas Tech have met in some pivotal games this season, in both football and basketball, and the latest installment of this battle occurs at the Marriott Center up in Provo, Utah.

This matchup lost a bit of luster, as the Red Raiders will be without their best player, JT Toppin. He suffered a torn ACL in their win against Arizona State, and it might be the reason why this team won't make a legitimate Final Four push.

The Red Raiders have a pivotal focus on strong guard play to run their offense, but it’s a lot easier when you have a big man like Toppin down low.

Texas Tech will have to find a way forward, as it's a sure-fire entry into the NCAA Tournament. It will still have an opportunity to make a splash, considering it ranks in the top 31 in both offensive and defensive efficiencies.

BYU Basketball

BYU is currently on the seven line for the NCAA Tournament, according to Bracket Matrix.

However, at one point in season, the Cougars had 16 wins to just one. Since then, they've gone 4-8, including an 8-9 record in the Big 12.

It's hard to ignore the eye-popping talent of AJ Dybantsa, and even though he's had some remarkable performances, it hasn't been enough for the Cougars because of a poor defense.

BYU isn't nearly as efficient on both sides of the basketball as Texas Tech has been, but it does play at a very fast pace — a stark contrast to how Texas Tech plays.

That pace could also play a bigger factor here, considering Tech will continue life without Toppin.

The Cougars have also been without Richie Saunders since the middle of February, which can be a key contributor to their struggles over the last 30 days.

Texas Tech vs BYU Pick, Betting Analysis

This is sort of a tricky game to handicap since there are a ton of major injuries on both teams. A big-time win without your star player for the majority of the game against Iowa State also has to have the Raiders confident.

But this one is in Provo.

And I think that is the angle I'll play. The home crowd will still be electric, and the Cougars' injury concerns have been an issue for some time.

Tech is going into new territory, so I think BYU gets a win, and we get a sort of let-down situation from Tech.

The Red Raiders rallied last time out in a road environment, but to do that again? That's a tough ask. I’ll take the moneyline.

My Pick: BYU ML -110 (Play to -120)
