UConn vs St. John's College Basketball Betting Preview
There may not have been a conference tournament championship matchup, power conference or otherwise, that felt more destined than this one.
St. John’s and UConn have been the two best teams in the Big East all season long, by a wide margin. When Villanova, the clear and obvious third best team in the conference, was upset in the quarterfinals, the Big East semifinals became a bit of a burden.
Seton Hall and Georgetown were merely in the way of these two giants, set to square off in an arena each will pack with rowdy loud fans.
My pre-tourney lean was St. John’s, but that was mostly due to the value on the Johnnies, with the marginally easier path to the title game and the slightly stronger home crowd advantage. I certainly feel good with a St. John’s +210 futures ticket in my pocket, given the moneyline here is closer to +130 depending on your book of choice.
At that price, or looking at the spread with UConn as one possession favorites, it’s tougher to parse. These teams met twice this season, each winning on their home floor. UConn’s home win was a dismantling, holding St. John’s to 40 points and forcing the Red Storm to miss its final 24 field goal attempts.
I believe UConn is the better team, with marginal advantages on both ends. I worry about how much the officiating, especially in the crucial matchup of Zuby Ejiofor and Tarris Reed Jr., can affect this game.
Most of all, I see this as a toss up game, where I’m happy to take the points and home court with the Johnnies. A little shooting regression possibility makes me feel safer, with the Red Storm shooting 10-of-39 (26%) from deep against UConn this season and Georgetown tossing up just 2-of-16 against the Huskies in the semifinals.
If St. John’s makes shots, the Garden will be rocking. Take the Red Storm.
My Pick: St. John's +2.5
