Minnesota Golden Gophers Betting Preview: Riding an All-Time High
What a two-week stretch it has been for P.J. Fleck and his Golden Gophers.
Following a gutsy three-point road win at Washington, Minnesota doubled down back at home with a 2014 victory over a floundering Michigan squad, giving Fleck his first 2-0 start in Big Ten play since 2019.
Two weeks ago, he smeared one of his players’ blood on his face in celebration. Last week he swan-dived into a sea of Gophers players, holding the Little Brown Jug before calling it “the best day of his life.”
So, what’s next?
A lot has changed in a month since Minnesota’s only embarrassing loss of the year, a 38-13 defeat at the hands of Kamario Taylor and Mississippi State. The Gophers have discovered a winning formula, and it screams throwback Big Ten success.
Defense and field position.
There’s nothing sexy about it, but it's paid dividends. Minnesota ranks fourth nationally in Average Field Position on offense, and somehow even better on defense (third).
They're constantly pinning opponents deep and playing with short fields. They limit mistakes and they capitalize on their opponents’ miscues.
You have to play 60 minutes of locked-in, disciplined football to beat this Gophers squad. And for their opponent this week, that’s often easier said than done.
Purdue Boilermakers Betting Preview: Air Raid Attack
Like Minnesota, Purdue has also turned over a new leaf. The Boilermakers just won their first conference game since 2023, and it came on the road as a sizeable underdog against Illinois.
How will they handle success? Nobody knows. No, seriously — nobody knows; they've never experienced a single win as a group against this level of competition.
Compared to Minnesota’s revised formula for success, Purdue’s win came with a bit of good fortune. The Boilers caught Illinois the same week that the Illini lost their defensive coordinator, and without many answers in the moment as a response.
This is still the same Purdue side that lost by 39 to Notre Dame two weeks ago and gave up a combined 90 points to Wake Forest and UCLA in non-conference losses.
Purdue’s saving grace has been its air attack, led by Ryan Browne. The Boilermakers rank 19th in offensive success rate, although they have their work cut out for them as Minnesota’s pass defense is its strength, ranking 32nd nationally in success rate allowed on passing plays.
If Minnesota neutralizes Purdue’s best trick, its intangibles and mistake-free approach should help it create separation.

Minnesota vs Purdue Pick, Betting Analysis
While both teams have earned some much-needed momentum as of late, analytically Minnesota still grades out as the much stronger side.
Action Analytics projects this spread at Minnesota -4.1, giving this a slight edge over the opening line. Fleck has his team rolling, and Barry Odom will need to teach his group how to handle success on the fly.
That’s easier said than done, especially when your opponent doesn’t beat themselves.
Play the Gophers up to four points.
Pick: Minnesota -2.5 (Play to -4)
