College Football QB Injury News, Updates: Ohio State’s Kyle McCord to Start, Nebraska’s Jeff Sims Questionable article feature image

Week 3 of the college football season is not without its quarterback injury news.

A number of signal-callers are banged up, while others are still competing for a starting spot. We'll take a look at the latest news from around the college football world on quarterback injuries entering this week's games.

College Football QB Injury News & Updates

Weber State



Utah QB injury news: Cam Rising is expected to be out for the Utes' Week 3 matchup against Weber State as he continues to work his way back from offseason knee surgery. According to head coach Kyle Whittingham, freshman Nate Johnson has been promoted to the starting spot ahead of previous starter Bryson Barnes.

Stony Brook


Arkansas State

Arkansas State QB injury news: As of Thursday, JT Shrout is still questionable to play against Stony Brook. Head coach Butch Jones said Monday that Shrout would practice this week and said he was "day-to-day" for Saturday's matchup.

Colorado State



Colorado State QB injury news: CSU head coach Jay Norvell announced Monday that Redshirt freshman Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi will start in the Rocky Mountain Showdown. Clay Millen was injured in the third quarter against Washington State but returned to practice and is available.




Northwestern QB injury news: Ben Bryant, who left Saturday's game against UTEP with an "upper-body injury" is probable to play against No. 21-ranked Duke.

Northern Illinois



Nebraska QB injury news: Jeff Sims was held out of practice Tuesday after injuring his ankle in Saturday's loss to Colorado. Backup QB Heinrich Haarberg finished the game. He and Chubba Purdy are “preparing to be the starters," according to offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield.

Head coach Matt Rhule will update the media on Sims' status today.

Eastern Michigan

UMass QB injury news: Massachusetts QB Taisun Phommachanh's status is up in the air for Saturday's matchup with Eastern Michigan. Carlos Davis will likely start under center, according to head coach Don Brown.




UTSA QB injury news: Frank Harris' status is unclear for Saturday's game. Head coach Jeff Traylor spoke to the media Monday but wouldn't give specifics on Harris' availability for practice or the game.




UCF QB injury news: John Rhys Plumlee, who went down with a leg injury against Boise State, will miss a few weeks. Backup Timmy McClain will play in his absence.




Indiana QB injury news: IU head coach Tom Allen announced Monday that redshirt freshman Tayven Jackson will start under center going forward.



Southern Mississippi

Tulane QB injury news: Head coach Willie Fritz said he will decide today or Friday on whether Michael Pratt will return from his knee injury. If Pratt doesn’t play, Kai Horton will get the start.




UVA QB injury news: Tony Muskett is expected to be the starter. Backup Anthony Colandrea played well against JMU, but offensive coordinator Des Kitchings said Muskett "is the guy again," if he's ready to go.

“You don’t lose your job for injury, because he’s earned that spot," he added. "But what it shows to everybody that we already knew, is we feel like we have two good quarterbacks that can go out and play for us at a high level and help us win.”

Long Island



Baylor QB injury news: Blake Shapen remains out for the next two weeks with an MCL injury. Backup Sawyer Robertson injured his ankle but stayed in the game in the second half.

Florida State


Boston College

Boston College QB news: According to head coach Jeff Hafley, Thomas Castellanos is set to start again this Saturday against Florida State after replacing the injured Emmett Morehead.

Iowa State



Ohio QB Injury news: Kurtis Rourke returned to the lineup last week and will play against ISU.




OU QB news: Jackson Arnold is getting some reps, but head coach Brent Venables called him the "No. 2 quarterback" despite the fact that the team will not redshirt him this season.

Tulsa QB Injury news: It's still a bit unclear who will get the start. Braylon Braxton practiced last week but could only put light pressure on his ankle, according to reports. Cardell Williams injured his hand in their last game, and Roman Fuller has also seen time at QB.

The most head coach Kevin Wilson would offer to the media?

"We’ll have a guy out there,” he said earlier this week.




FIU QB news: True freshman Keyone Jenkins started for Grayson James again in Week 3.

UConn QB injury news: Joseph Fagnano left with a shoulder injury and never returned. He has been ruled out for the rest of the season. Ta'Quan Roberson Robertson took over and will start Saturday against FIU.

Sacramento State



Stanford QB injury news: Ashton Daniels left in the second quarter against USC and didn’t return. Justin Lamson took over, but head coach Troy Taylor has not announced who will start this week.

Virginia Tech



VA Tech QB injury news: Grant Wells injured his ankle late and was replaced by Kyron Drones.

Wells reportedly threw some passes in drills, but Drones went first, and freshman Pop Watson took 1-on-1 red-zone throws during the practice session available to media members, according to Andy Bitter of Tech Sideline.

Western Michigan



Iowa QB injury news: Cade McNamara reportedly was a full participant in practice this week for the first time since August when he initially injured his quad.




Kansas QB injury news: Jalon Daniels was limited in practice earlier this week.

Nevada QB injury news: Brendon Lewis missed a few snaps after a big hit. AJ Bianco took a few snaps, but Lewis is the starter, according to head coach Ken Wilson.

Fresno State



ASU QB injury news: Drew Pyne returned to practice after missing the past month with an injury with true freshman Jaden Rashada filling in at quarterback.

Head coach Kenny Dillingham said Pyne is "not 100% right now, but he should be healthy this week. From that standpoint, we need to see what the game plan is and go from there.”




Wyoming QB injury news: Andrew Peasley left the game with a shoulder injury in the third quarter and was replaced by Evan Svoboda. Peasley is expected to start against Texas.




Akron QB injury news: Jeff Undercuffler Jr. replaced DJ Irons in Saturday's comeback win against Morgan State.




JMU QB news: Jordan McCloud was inserted into the starting lineup ahead of Alonza Barnett in Week 1 and became the full-time starter in Week 2.

South Alabama


Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State QB news: The three-way competition between Alan Bowman, Garret Rangel and Gunnar Gundy will continue, according to head coach Mike Gundy.

North Texas


Louisiana Tech

North Texas QB injury news: Chandler Rogers took over in the second half Saturday for starter Stone Earle (cramps), but both quarterbacks are expected to see the field against LA Tech.

North Carolina Central



UCLA QB news: The L.A. Times is reporting that true freshman Dante Moore will likely start ahead of Ethan Garbers, despite head coach Chip Kelly's refusal to commit to a starter this week.




Cal QB news: Ben Finley started the last game and played the first five series, but Sam Jackson V took the majority of snaps the rest of the way.

ULM QB news: Hunter Herring replaced Jiya Wright in the season opener and started Week 2.

Ohio State QB news: Ohio State head coach Ryan Day will start junior Kyle McCord ahead of sophomore Devin Brown.

App State QB injury news: Ryan Burger could be out for a month with a hand injury. Joey Aguilar will continue to start in his place.

ECU QB news: Mason Garcia played most of the game in Week 2 but was pulled for Alex Flinn again.

ECU head football coach Mike Houston wouldn't say if either guy had the upper hand as the starter for this week: “No position in our program is any different than any other. There is always competition.”

USF QB injury news: Gerry Bohanon is still not ready to play. Byrum Brown should be the starter this week.

Ball State QB news: Week 1 starter Layne Hatcher took over in the second half for an ineffective Kadin Semonza and third-stringer Kiael Kelly also got reps in a blowout.

Jacksonville State QB news: Logan Smothers replaced Zion Webb in their loss to Coastal Carolina. There's no word on who will get the nod this week.
