How Marshall Reached the New Orleans Bowl

Marshall’s 2021 season was a tale of multiple streaks.

To start, the Thundering Herd won their first two games of the year, followed by three straight losses.

Charles Huff’s team then righted the ship for a bit by posting four consecutive wins, before stumbling down the stretch with two losses in its final three games.

What does this all add up to? A 7-5 overall record and a 6-5 record against the number.

Marshall also posted some of the most drastic home/away against-the-spread (ATS) splits this year, going 5-1 ATS on the road, but just 1-4 ATS at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

How Louisiana Reached the New Orleans Bowl

If Week 1 didn’t exist, UL-Lafayette would be the talk of the town. The Ragin’ Cajuns compensated for a season-opening loss to Texas only to rattle off 12 straight wins — the latest of which was a Sun Belt title victory over Appalachian State.

Head coach Billy Napier was lights-out with the program, producing a 39-12 overall clip and 27-5 mark in conference play. He’s off to Florida, filling the vacancy left by Dan Mullen.

The Ragin’ Cajuns have only two conference losses over the last three years. They’ve gone bowling four years in a row now, recently picking up a win over UTSA in the 2020 First Responder Bowl.
