Prairie View A&M Betting Preview: Strong Running Game
Prairie View A&M had its best season in 15 years in the first year under Tremaine Jackson, going 10-4 and claiming the SWAC title. Jackson was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award as PVAMU won nine games or more for the first time since 2009.
Now, 15 starters return, and 28 new players come in via the portal, bolstering one of the most well-constructed HBCU rosters in America heading into 2026.
Cameron Peters is the big loss at quarterback, and the Panthers are seeking to replace him with Tevin Carter, who played in six games last season.
While the passing production may not be matched, Carter adds a running element to the position and, even in limited time last year, rushed for 320 yards before sacks with five scores.
Leading back Chase Bingmon is back, while Tre Leonard and Konyae Hunter transfer in from the FBS level. This is a strong bunch that will run the ball very effectively.
The leading returning receiver is Rodny Ojo, who caught 30 passes for 427 yards and three touchdowns last season. While three other top producers depart, Akim Lanieux, Toric Goins Jr. and Braylon Finney transfer in and should produce. Xylan Williams also adds depth to the position.
The offensive line was outstanding last season, paving the way for a 5.1-yard-per-carry rushing average while allowing just eight sacks. Seven experienced players are back, and transfers from Houston and Troy will bolster the unit's depth.
The defensive line was strong last season and has two starters returning: Christopher Harvey and Malik Gucake. Molik Mason and VJ Bronson both go 300 pounds in the middle, and the line should be stout against the run once again.
The linebacker group is being rebuilt with transfers from East Texas A&M and Jackson State, and four upperclassmen are ready to take the next step.
The secondary allowed just 139 pass yards per game and returns a pair of contributors from last season. Four senior safeties are ready to step up, headlined by Cornelius Davis Jr., who made 30 tackles last season.
Tarleton State Betting Preview: Complete Rebuild
Tarleton State is coming off its best season at the FCS level as the Texans ran through the UAC before defeating North Dakota in the second round of the FCS playoffs.
The season came to a close in disappointing fashion, but Todd Whitten continues to do an excellent job with this program, and he'll be entering his 17th season.
The roster has 63 new players, and nearly every position is a full rebuild. We'll get into the roster and then talk about this fascinating matchup.
The QB battle is deadlocked as Kaden Anderson and Braedyn Locke are splitting first-team reps deep into fall camp. Replacing the production Victor Gabalis had last year will be difficult, but a pair of FBS transfers who started at their previous stops is a nice place to start.
The running back room will feature James Paige and Tylan Hines, who both produced last year. Transfers from Cal Poly and Nicholls add depth to the position.
The receiver room sees its top three depart, but Marquis Willis and Bryce Parker are back, and the Texans add BJ Fleming from North Dakota, Ajai Harrell from Alabama State and DeAndre Buchannon from West Georgia.
The passing game has the production potential to develop. The offensive line has one starter back and nine transfers, so sorting out the right combination will be a priority.
The defense loses the top nine producers along the defensive line. Transfers from EIU and Stephen F. Austin will join a handful of lower-division transfers, and this could be a unit that takes a step back.
Three linebackers return who had experience from last season, and Kenyon Partridge also comes over after spending last year in the SoCon.
The secondary saw five players depart from last season, and unproven talent from the D-II and JuCo ranks come in.
This defense has a lot of work to do to get back to last year’s level.

The line on this one opened with Tarleton State 28.5-point favorites with a total of 54.5, and steam has pushed this one down to 21.5.
I like PVAMU to give the rebuilt Texans a game.
PVAMU will be able to run the football. Its offensive line has excellent size, and it has experienced players up and down the offensive line. The tackles are huge here, and the stable of backs PVAMU has will find holes and move the chains on the ground.
Carter adds the running element needed to break down the defense, so I expect a few successful drives, giving PVAMU a chance to put points on the board.
Tarleton State will round into a top FCS team this season, but it'll have to improve as the season progresses. There are so many transfers to account for, and it'll be hard to get the offense and defense performing at a high level in week one.
The QB is going to be a downgrade, and with a new offensive coordinator, Tarleton State will implement a new offensive install. I expect slightly dipped production in the opener.
PVAMU is a great football team, and it's well coached. I think the Panthers can keep this game close well into the fourth quarter, and the current line is giving the Texans a lot of respect based on last year’s results.
