Sam Houston vs Liberty College Football Preview

Sam Houston State Bearkats Betting Preview: Misleading Start
A 1-3 record isn't much to boast, but Sam Houston State is a bit better than it suggests. After dropping its first game at Troy (24-21), the Bearkats lost to Tulsa by a score (a much better team than anticipated) and to Texas Tech (a game in which 14 points came on back-to-back pick-sixes).
Though we have no solid data points of a Sam Houston win — it beat FCS Nicholls 59-0 — those losses give us a pretty good understanding of what this team is good at.
So far, Sam Houston has excelled against the pass, ranking 30th in passing success rate and 16th in yards per dropback.
Given the opposing cast of quarterbacks consists of veteran Goose Crowder, emerging playmaker Baylor Hayes, and Will Hammond, those numbers should be respected.
But the defense also gives up way too many explosives in the run game, a problem given its upcoming schedule of Liberty, New Mexico State and Jacksonville State.
Offensively, Landyn Locke has been serviceable and certainly much better than last year. Phil Longo has fully installed the Air Raid, with only two other teams passing more frequently than Sam Houston's 61.3% (Hawaii, Oregon State).
That's led to some pretty flat offensive performances against teams whose pass rush and secondary can win one-on-one battles, which, so far, has been most of them.
Given its remaining cast of opponents, Sam Houston will almost certainly improve on its 1-7 mark in Conference USA from a year ago.
Liberty Flames Betting Preview: Rewrite the First Impression
As the season evolves, so too should evaluations of teams.
Liberty started the year losing by a score to James Madison. At the time, we expected regression given the cleaning out of the staff and roster, and then escaping against FCS Gardner-Webb by the skin of its teeth (GWU had unexpectedly fired its head coach days before this game).
In Week 3, Liberty appeared to be a complete write-off.
But James Madison appears to be a legitimate team once again under Billy Napier and consensus power ratings put the Dukes along the lines of Virginia, UCF, and Minnesota.
How would we view the Flames if that resume showed a 20-13 loss to Vanderbilt?
The next three games saw Liberty rattle off three wins by a combined score of 115-46. Those wins came over a struggling Ball State team, Coastal Carolina (on the road), and Delaware (down its starting QB, but also on the road).
You can be varying levels of impressed with those games, but Liberty is piecing together complete games and is a clear favorite to win Conference USA (odds nearing even).
Liberty is excellent on standard downs thanks to a strong run game spearheaded by former blue-chipper Kam Davis (340 yards).
Even Deshawn Purdie found new life, throwing for over 800 yards, six touchdowns, and no interceptions.
Receiver Makai Jackson (400 yards, four touchdowns) appears to be a star.
The Flames' defense has been equally excellent, completely shutting off the hose of opposing passing attacks and forcing plenty of turnovers.
Rush end Brenton Williams is on his way to an all-conference season, logging 12 pressures and two sacks so far, and the second level is as good as you'll find in this conference.
The talent in the secondary runs two deep, with nine defensive backs already having played 100+ snaps.
This is a team that should be treated as the best in Conference USA.

Sam Houston vs Liberty Pick, Betting Analysis
Liberty has sat as a -13.5 home favorite for almost the entire duration of this line; a brief touchdown to -13 spawned enough action to bump the number back up. The over/under was bet up from 50.5 at open to 52.5, above the key total of 52.
The bottom line is that Liberty has a better roster and is an ascending team in 2026. It has the players in the secondary to fully match what Sam Houston wants to do, plus two disruptors up front — Williams and DE Lorenzo Payne — to put pressure on Locke behind a subpar offensive line.
Locke has six recorded turnover-worthy throws for four interceptions, including those two ill-advised pick-sixes against Texas Tech. Perhaps he's not "turnover-prone," but Locke is at least susceptible to making mistakes.
Sam Houston is also clearly vulnerable up front and in the run game, a perfect recipe for disaster against a Jamey Chadwell offense.
Liberty calls a run on nearly 63% of its offensive plays, 12th-most in the country and eighth among teams that don't run a traditional option (or slight modification of it like Rice).
Although Liberty has been bad as a big favorite as a member of Conference USA, I'm more concerned with Longo's record off a bye week.
At Sam Houston, Longo led the Bearkats to an 0-3 ATS mark coming off a bye week, an indicator that there's more rust than readiness with his approach. Sam Houston is 0-6 ATS coming off the bye since it joined the FBS.
Two seasons of abject failure in Lynchburg may have finally motivated Chadwell to change his approach to games.
With a roster full of former blue-chip players thriving, this is a dangerous team in Conference USA.
Pick: Liberty -13.5 (Play to -14)
