VMI Keydets Betting Preview: Long Season Ahead
VMI is going through a significant transition heading into 2026 as the Keydets shift back to the triple-option offense while welcoming a new head coach.
Danny Rocco left to go on staff at, of all places, Virginia Tech, and Ashley Ingram comes in trying to course-correct after back-to-back 1-11 seasons in Lexington, VA.
The opener did not go well, as VMI was defeated by Idaho State 38-10. The Keydets managed just three first downs in the first half, and their offense was very poor. Three runs resulted in 124 yards and the other 49 rushing attempts went for just 105.
The passing game was non-existent, and VMI was just 3-of-16 on third down. This is going to be a long year for VMI, and given the circumstances, there will be few opportunities to notch wins.
As mentioned, the offense is migrating back to the triple option, but the personnel is lacking. There's very little explosiveness, and each of the three quarterbacks struggled to command the troops.
In Week 0, Chandler Wilson ran seven times for 62 yards with one long run of 31, and Leo Boehling carried the ball 17 times for just 40 yards.
There are no redeeming qualities in the receiver room, and the line cannot hold up in pass protection. I do not feel comfortable with VMI being able to execute a play against Virginia Tech that will achieve a first down when the situation is worse than 3rd-and-8.
The defense was somewhat competent against Idaho State, which was breaking in a new receiver group, but it still surrendered 366 passing yards while registering very little havoc.
The defensive line is undersized as VMI faces the same recruiting restrictions featured with Army, Navy and Air Force. It's thus hard to acquire larger bodies to fill the interior positions.
Three starters return in the linebacker room headlined by Isaiah Grevious and Camden Clinton. The secondary lacks experience as three starters depart from a unit that ranked dead last in the FCS in pass defense ratings last season.
Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview: Vastly Improved Roster
Virginia Tech was very fortunate in how the coaching carousel shook out. Brent Pry was let go early in the season, but the Hokies ended up hiring James Franklin, who was fired from his position at Penn State.
In a fairly unprecedented move, Franklin hired Pry back on staff to run the defense, and naturally, he will help with the transition. Franklin brought in a top-25-level portal class, and the talent infusion will be evident in Week 1. Virginia Tech will be vastly improved this season.
Ethan Grunkemeyer transferred in and will quarterback the offense in 2026. He will have familiarity with the system and should flourish with an increased level of talent around him.
Marcellous Hawkins Jr. is back at running back after leading the Hokies in rushing with 749 yards last season, and Bill Davis is also in from Louisiana.
The receivers are strong with Takye Heath and Ayden Greene back and Que’Sean Brown transferring in from Duke. The tight end room sets Virginia Tech apart with mismatch creators in Benji Gosnell, Ja’Ricous Hairston and Luke Reynolds.
The offensive line has major beef with Logan Howland and Kyle Altuner transferring in. I expect much more physicality and attitude from this bunch.
The defense returns seven starters from last year’s stop unit, and four Penn State transfers are in along the defensive line to provide top-end talent and depth. Keon Wylie and Kaleb Spencer anchor the linebacker room with Kenny Woseley Jr. locking down the nickel position.
The secondary could be a major strength with all four starters back, including Thomas Williams, Tyson Flowers and Quentin Reddish. A pair of G6-level transfers will also contribute, making the unit deep and experienced.
VMI vs Virginia Tech Pick, Betting Analysis
This line opened with Virginia Tech listed as a 47.5-point favorite with a total set at 62.5. Steam has driven the number up to Virginia Tech -55.5, but that is the only way I could look here.
I laid the number early in the week and would lay it here too, up to 55.5.
VMI simply cannot compete here on the same field as Virginia Tech. The offensive line was getting blown off the ball by Idaho State, and 43 of the 52 rushing attempts accumulated five yards or less.
There is simply no way VMI can sustain possession and move the ball to create scoring chances. I don’t think it can achieve more than 10 first downs in the game.
Virginia Tech is going to have short fields and the Hokies will register explosive, chunk plays on the ground and through the air. The tight ends are going to be a major problem for the VMI linebackers, and the receivers are going to have the advantage over the Keydets' weak corners.
I expect 500 total yards at a minimum. This will be one of the biggest mismatches of the season between FCS and FBS competition. The Hokies could score 70 points here.
We know Franklin knows the number and has managed second halves of games accordingly. I fully expect a full-court press to reinvigorate the fan base and get people excited about Hokie football again.
