In just over 24 hours, Delaware will become the first state outside of Nevada to accept legal sports wagers at three casino properties. With an eye on Saturday's Belmont Stakes and Justify's attempt to become the 13th horse to win the Triple Crown, New Jersey's Monmouth Park is hopeful that it will be open and ready for action on Friday, June 8.
According to a Tweet from ESPN's David Purdum, New Jersey lawmakers are expected to address a sports betting bill this week that would allow operators, such as Monmouth Park, to begin accept legal wagers as soon as Friday.
While both regulators and operators are hoping to open by the weekend to capitalize on Saturday's Triple Crown buzz, the 2018 World Cup, which starts on June 14, is also a major target for all parties involved in legalized sports betting.
One roadblock for those hopeful of a Friday launch could be New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. According to Brent Johnson, who covers politics for NJ Advance Media, the bill should go through the state legislature later this week, but there is a chance Murphy may hold off on signing until he has more time to fully analyze the bill.
