Casinos in Maryland continue to put up strong numbers.

Maryland's casinos experienced one of their best months to date in May, generating $176.4 million in gaming revenue. This figure, which combines earnings from both slot machines and table games, ranks as Maryland's seventh-highest monthly total ever.

Compared to May 2024, the numbers are up by nearly 2%, translating to a solid increase of over $3.2 million.

The latest figures represent a slight bounce back compared to the numbers in April and the figures the Old Line State compiled in March.

Boost to Maryland's State Contributions

One of the significant outcomes of May 2025's casino revenues is the contribution to the state coffers.

More than $76 million was directed to state funds, marking a 2.2% increase from the previous May. Of this amount, nearly $55 million flowed into the Education Trust Fund, seeing a similar growth of 2.2% compared to last year.

These funds play a crucial role not just in education but also in supporting local communities, the horse racing industry, and businesses owned by minorities and women.

A Snapshot of Maryland's Six Casinos

Maryland is home to six privately owned casinos, each contributing uniquely to the state's overall gaming revenue. Here's a breakdown of their performances in May 2025:

MGM National Harbor: Leading the Pack

MGM National Harbor, located in Prince George’s County, led the casino pack with revenue of $75.4 million. This marked a 4.3% growth from May 2024, underlining its popularity and strategic location as a key player in Maryland’s casino industry.

Live! Casino & Hotel: A Slight Dip

Anne Arundel County's Live! Casino & Hotel experienced a slight decrease in revenue, totaling $63.9 million, down by 1.8% from last year. Despite this minor setback, it remains a significant contributor to the state’s gaming revenue.

Horseshoe Casino: Steady Growth

In Baltimore City, Horseshoe Casino reported earnings of $15.2 million, reflecting a solid 3.4% increase. This steady growth emphasizes its ongoing appeal to both locals and visitors.

Horseshoe, in Baltimore, is one of six casinos in Maryland.

Hollywood Casino: An Impressive Climb

Hollywood Casino in Cecil County saw one of the highest growth rates, with a 6.4% increase, taking its May 2025 revenue to $8.3 million. This upward trend showcases its strategic efforts to attract more patrons.

Ocean Downs Casino: Riding the Waves of Success

Ocean Downs Casino in Worcester County earned $8.8 million, marking a 5% increase from May 2024. This casino's continued growth reflects its importance to the local economy and tourism.

Rocky Gap Casino: A Minor Setback

Lastly, Rocky Gap Casino Resort in Allegany County experienced a slight decline in revenue, generating $4.9 million, a 0.8% decrease from the previous year. Despite this dip, it remains an integral part of Maryland’s gaming landscape.

Casinos in Maryland Shine Bright in May 2025

Maryland's casinos had a great month in May 2025, showing just how strong and promising the state's gaming industry is.

The money these casinos make helps boost the state's economy and supports local communities, schools, and various businesses. As time passes, it'll be fascinating to watch how each casino evolves and adapts to new opportunities and challenges.

Although real money online casinos are not yet legal in Maryland, lawmakers are working on it.

In the meantime, residents can play social and sweepstakes casino games online. These platforms are very popular because they allow you to play for fun or purchase in-game currency, like gold coins or sweepstakes coins, which can be used to redeem prizes.
