The competition for three downstate casino licenses in New York just took a turn.
A new poll conducted by Tulchin Research reveals that nearly two-thirds of Manhattan voters are in favor of Freedom Plaza, an ambitious civic and cultural project planned for Midtown’s East Side.
In fact, there's especially high support in Midtown East, where 57% of voters endorse the project. The findings underscore a citywide demand for more affordable housing and expanded public open space, signaling a readiness for transformative urban solutions.
Key Features of Freedom Plaza
Freedom Plaza, designed by the Soloviev Group and Mohegan, aims to address Manhattan's pressing needs by offering community spaces, job opportunities, and affordable housing.

The project has garnered widespread approval across various demographics, reflecting its alignment with the local residents' priorities. Here are some of the standout features:
- Green Space: An impressive 85% of those polled favor the proposed 4.7-acre park and public green space along the East River. This addition will include a playground and community gathering spots, offering a breath of fresh air in the dense urban landscape.
- Local Job Creation: Approximately 82% support the project's focus on employing local workers and vendors, emphasizing job training and creating long-term opportunities in sectors such as construction, hospitality, and engineering, with the ultimate goal of bolstering the local economy.
- Essential Services and Retail: Another 82% back the inclusion of a grocery store, daycare center, gathering spaces, and locally focused dining and retail options. These services are designed to enhance the quality of life for residents in the area.
- Affordable Housing: With 78% support, the plan to build over 500 affordable homes within the 1,000+ residential units addresses the crucial need for housing that working families can afford.
According to Ben Tulchin, President of Tulchin Research, the poll results demonstrate a significant understanding among Manhattan voters of the importance of bold urban development strategies.
Other Projects Competing for Downstate Casino Licenses
While Freedom Plaza gains momentum, several other projects are in the running for a downstate casino license:

- Caesars Palace Times Square: In partnership with SL Green Realty Corp, Caesars is proposing a casino in Times Square, leveraging the area’s bustling atmosphere to attract tourists and locals alike.
- Resorts World New York City: Currently operating a racetrack and casino in Queens, Resorts World seeks a full casino license to expand its offerings and strengthen its position in New York’s gaming industry.
There are at least 7 projects still in the running, including The Avenir and one at Ferry's Point. Each bring unique visions for the city’s future, and they're all fiercely competing for the approval that could unlock substantial economic benefits.

Jessica Walker, President of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, has highlighted the benefits of granting a gaming license in Manhattan. This move could create thousands of good jobs and bring in billions of dollars, providing a chance to boost the city's economy and encourage growth and renewal.
