Chiefs vs Chargers Props, Preview
We had a scare this week with reports that it was Najee Harris atop of the Chargers' depth chart, but we've had confirmation from head coach Jim Harbaugh, via Rich Eisen, that we're set to see Omarion Hampton get the start on Friday.
Hampton was picked 22nd overall in this year's NFL Draft out of UNC, where he was twice a first-team All-American and twice first-team All-ACC.
There are big expectations on his shoulders, but we know a Harbaugh-coached team will be running the ball a lot. As a result, Hampton has a great chance of finding the endzone in his debut.
Pick: Omarion Hampton Anytime Touchdown (+155; FanDuel)
Hampton is getting the start, but we are almost certain to see Harris on the field at some point.
The former Steeler was initially doubtful for this game, but it now appears that we'll see him. The drafting of Hampton has overshadowed Harris' arrival in L.A., but this is a running back with four consecutive 1,000+ yard seasons.
There are two key factors we need to consider. Firstly, Hampton may not be the bell-cow back yet. Given his talent, there's every chance that he develops into one this season, but right now, he hasn't earned that, and Harris is a respectable veteran.
Secondly, this is a Harbaugh team, so we are going to see a lot of the ground game.
Last season, J.K. Dobbins was the lead back, but the team still heavily leaned on its second-string running back. A look back at the team's final three games of the season and you can see the backup running back still had a minimum of seven carries in each game, whether it was Gus Edwards or Hassan Haskins, neither of whom have the talent of Harris.
Pick: Najee Harris Over 6.5 Rushing Attempts (+120; Bet365)
Thanks to last season's injury that saw him miss the first 15 games of the season, we haven't really seen that much of Hollywood Brown in a Chiefs uniform. It's been a long time since the Ravens drafted him back in 2019, but he's always been a dependable wideout.
Across his career, he's averaged 4.35 receptions per game in the regular season — last season he caught nine passes in the two games he played before playoffs. Those numbers did drop in the postseason, but he's still got the talent to contribute.
It feels like Patrick Mahomes has been looking for a playmaker and with Travis Kelce past his prime, rookie Jalen Royals out and Rashee Rice suspended, there's a real opening for Brown. He's had a camp to work with his quarterback and comes into this game healthy. He could really exceed expectations here.
Pick: Marquise Brown Over 3.5 Receptions (-105; Bet365)
Last year, Isiah Pacheco started the season as the Chiefs' bell-cow back following a great rookie season, but then he got hurt.
However, upon his return, he found himself sharing the backfield with Kareem Hunt. With that in recent memory, plus the arrival of Elijah Mitchell and rookie Brashard Smith, the optimism around Pacheco isn't too high this season.
While Pacheco managed over 9.5 receiving yards in just two of his eight games after returning from injury, we need to remember that he did manage 33 and 21 receiving yards in two games before going down.
There's no reason to think he won't get the bulk of the snaps again following a summer of continued rehabilitation.
Pick: Isiah Pacheco Over 9.5 Receiving Yards (-110; Bet365)
