How Have the Super Bowl Lines Have Moved So Far?

Super Bowl 54 has been pretty boring in terms of line movement — at least on the point spread.

Kansas City opened -1 after the AFC and NFC Championship Games two weeks ago, and was quickly bet up to -1.5. That's where most of the market then opened.

The line has fluttered a bit between -1 and -1.5 depending on the book, with Chiefs moneyline prices bouncing between -115 and -130, as well. But that's about it.

A few books — Peppermill in Las Vegas and Golden Nugget, which operates in New Jersey and Vegas — went to a pick'em or 49ers -1 briefly.

Movement on the total has been the more interesting story. Westgate in Las Vegas opened at 51.5 right after the conference title games, but that number was clearly too low, as bettors hammered it to 54 almost immediately.

By the time the rest of the books opened Super Bowl odds, they were at 54.

Super Bowl Futures Odds History

There have been just three teams with longer than 22-1 preseason odds to win the Super Bowl: 2001 Patriots (+6000), 2007 Giants (+3000) and the 2017 Eagles (+4000).

The 49ers would join that rare company, as they opened the season at 30-1 or higher to win Super Bowl 54. The Chiefs were among the favorites (less than 10-1, depending on your book).

Why the Point Spread Hasn't Really Mattered in the Super Bowl

The point spread rarely comes into play in the Super Bowl when the line is below a touchdown. That means the favorite either wins and covers the spread, or the underdog pulls off an outright upset.

Of the 26 Super Bowls to close with a spread of +6 or less, the line never came into play — 13 favorites won and covered, 13 underdogs won outright.

The sample is small, but history tells us to forgo the 1.5 points on San Fransisco and take the moneyline at plus-money instead.
