Commanders vs 49ers NFL Monday Night Football Preview
The 49ers are off to an incredible start in 2026, sitting at 5-0 and ranking No. 1 overall in DVOA, which includes the top offensive rank by a wide margin. The 49ers even rank No. 3 in defensive DVOA, which I don't think many would've predicted, especially with all of the injuries they've had to deal with.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan deserves all of the praise he's been getting — and then some. And not just for the changes he has installed on offense, but for also bringing in Raheem Morris to run the defense.
The leader on the field has been quarterback Brock Purdy, who is in a tight race at the top of the odds board for MVP with Josh Allen.
Purdy has been nearly flawless through five games, leading the NFL in both adjusted EPA and success rate (57%). He's also one of three qualified quarterbacks — alongside Lamar Jackson and Jared Goff — completing over 70% of his passes against the blitz, which is noteworthy ahead of a matchup against the Commanders, who are blitzing at the league's second-highest rate under new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones (a Brian Flores disciple).
San Francisco is scary and one of the rightful Super Bowl favorites.
Conversely, the Commanders have had a rocky start to their 2026 campaign and likely won't be sniffing a Super Bowl in 2026.
They enter this Monday night NFC showdown at 1-3-1 overall after a colossal time management gaffe cost them a win against the Giants last week after blowing a double-digit lead.
In fairness, three different quarterbacks have played for the Commanders through five weeks, which makes it a bit more difficult to evaluate their results. You can basically throw out the game overseas when Athan Kaliakmanis was forced into action for Marcus Mariota.
Washington's offensive ceiling is obviously much higher with Jayden Daniels under center. In his return from injury last week, his elbow didn't seem to have any ill effects, as the former LSU product even rushed for over 100 yards on just nine attempts. His legs will once again be critical against a San Francisco defensive line that has showed a lot of juice even without Nick Bosa, who will miss tonight's contest.
The Washington defense still doesn't have an abundance of talent, but it is certainly much more formidable than the unit we saw last year. The Commanders have much more speed and athleticism after basically shedding all of the older contributors from last year's stop unit.
They also brought in a new defensive coordinator in Daronte Jones, who is using the blitz to compensate for that lack of talent.
And the Flores blitz scheme isn't just used to get to the quarterback. It's also effective in slowing down opposing ground games. So far this season, Washington's defense ranks sixth in rush EPA (Minnesota ranks first), which is obviously key against a Kyle Shanahan offense.
Commanders vs 49ers Prediction, Betting Analysis
This looks like a perfect buy low / sell high opportunity, which is the lens I view NFL betting through.
In my opinion, we have reached the peak of the market on the 49ers, who were laying a similar number at home a few weeks ago agains the Cardinals (who covered).
Since that game, the 49ers have defeated the Broncos and Seahawks in a pair of games that could've honestly went either way if not for Denver's secondary injuries and a Jaxon Smith-Njigba critical wide-open drop in the final minute of regulation. Plus, as we saw on Thursday night, both of those offenses are completely broken.
The 49ers' other three wins came against the Cardinals (who put up 30), the dismal Dolphins and the sleepy Rams (who also may be broken) in Australia. While the schedule has been difficult on paper, the defense has certainly benefited from facing some defective offenses, so they may be a bit more vulnerable on that end than the underlying metrics may suggest, especially without Nick Bosa and Dre Greenlaw (suspended).
All of these injuries/absences have to catch up to San Francisco eventually, right?
I project this at under a touchdown, so I am happy to sell San Francisco at what I perceive to be the top of its market rating.
There's still some injury uncertainty on both sides heading into tonight's game (I'm hoping/assuming Stefon Diggs goes) which makes this a bit trickier, but I'm still okay taking over a touchdown with the road underdog.
Pick: Commanders +7.5 (-112)
