Blues vs. Mammoth Preview

St. Louis Blues

This season was a total disappointment for the Blues. But luckily, they made a resurgence after the Olympic break, and made the playoff race awfully interesting.

It started by trading captain Brayden Schenn, and shortly after, saw Jimmy Snuggerud turn into a major player on this team. Since returning from the break, Snuggerud posted 26 points over 24 games.

Not only that Dylan Holloway and Robert Thomas were obvious bright spots for St. Louis’ offense.

There’s definitely a lot to like here about the Blues, especially coming into next season. When you take their 5-on-5 play over the past 20 games into account, St. Louis had played to a 13th-best expected goals rate.

But not only that, it seems like the Blues have their goaltender of the future in Joel Hofer.

Hofer took the reins by playing to a 14.4 GSAx over his last 20 games, and a .910 SV% all season.

Utah Mammoth

Utah doesn’t really have much to play for here, as it already knows it’ll be playing the Vegas Golden Knights in the playoffs.

So at this point, all the Mammoth need to do here is get out of this game without getting hurt.

I wouldn’t be surprised if coach Andre Tourigny opts to take a few of his top players out of tonight’s game and insert some young talent like Danil But and Maveric Lamoureux.

Season-long stats shouldn’t mean much either since this is a meaningless game here. Utah will certainly play to win – all players do. But with a highly anticipated team making the playoffs for the first time in Utah, methinks the staff would want the boys to pump the breaks.

Karel Vejmelka is easily going to be starter for the playoffs, so expect Vitek Vanecek to get the nod tonight. He’s been playing to a mild .883 SV% this season, with a -0.1 GSAx over his last 10 games.

Blues vs. Mammoth Prediction

Given the fact that there is nothing to play for, for the Mammoth, I’m rolling with the Blues here.

The whole point of the second half of the season was to right the wrongs of the early part of the season, and they did just that.

They shed some contracts, elevated their young talent, and found their goalie for next season.

Tonight’s game isn’t really about the numbers, it’s mostly about what both teams have to play for, and as we established, Utah is just waiting until Game 1 against Vegas.

St. Louis, on the other hand, has the chance to end the season on a high note.

Pick: St. Louis Blues Moneyline (-128, FanDuel)
