FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing the most severe threat to his decade-long tenure at the helm of global soccer, holding an emergency crisis meeting with senior executives in Morocco following the catastrophic collapse of his scheme to privatize commercial rights to the FIFA World Cup.

This scenario has prompted Polymarket traders to reassess their opinions about the soccer mogul’s future on the “Gianni Infantino out as FIFA President by December 31?” market.

FIFA’s Emergency Meeting

In an effort to assess his standing and formulate a plan for survival, Infantino organized Wednesday's emergency discussions in Morocco. The nation, which is co-hosting the 2030 World Cup, has a football federation that continues to be one of the few remaining entities openly supporting him.

The urgent meeting at the African operations headquarters of FIFA in Salé takes place in the wake of an unparalleled revolt inside the leadership of international soccer. This crisis features widespread demands for Infantino’s departure and intensifying opposition from UEFA, the governing body for European soccer.

The turmoil erupted after Infantino presented a controversial proposal to FIFA’s 211 member associations to sell a 20% equity stake in a newly established commercial body for $4.2 billion.

The Failed World Cup Plan

The plan involved private investment funds and an entity linked to the family of U.S. President Donald Trump. Infantino promised upfront windfalls of $20 million to $40 million for smaller national federations.

However, the gambit triggered immediate backlash across the global game. Critics, led by UEFA, accused Infantino of "selling the soul of soccer" to consolidate political power ahead of his March 2027 reelection bid.

Facing fierce opposition, Infantino formally abandoned the project. Yet, the retreat has failed to calm the uprising. European governing bodies, alongside members of CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), have reportedly raised the prospect of an Extraordinary FIFA Congress.

The "Infantino Out" Odds Volatility

Right now, Polymarket traders believe there is a 28% chance that Gianni Infantino is dismissed from his FIFA presidential seat before December 31. In late July, those odds reached an all-time high of 53% and just a few hours ago, the Infantino resignation was trading at 42% implied chances.

Breaking news regarding the collapse of Infantino’s World Cup plan—and the subsequent backlash led by UEFA and its primary representatives—has caused the odds to fluctuate continuously over the past few days.

Adding fuel to the fire, Portuguese football icon Luis Figo issued a statement demanding Infantino's immediate resignation. "Today I join others from across our game and call for Gianni Infantino to resign as FIFA President. Infantino has debased the office that he promised to elevate," Figo wrote.

With seven months remaining until the next scheduled FIFA Congress, world soccer stands at its most volatile political juncture since the 2015 corruption scandal that ended Sepp Blatter’s presidency.

As political pressure mounts, prediction markets have seen a massive surge in trading activity surrounding Infantino's executive future. The results of the Morocco meeting will be crucial both for the future of FIFA, and for the outcome of the Polymarket contract.
