Things could get pretty ugly Wednesday at Camp Nou when Spanish giant Barcelona hosts Dynamo Kyiv in Champions League action.
Barcelona enters this match atop the Group G table, sitting on six points via its 2-0 win against Juventus and 5-1 rout of Ferencváros in its most recent set of UCL fixtures.
On the other side, Dynamo Kyiv comes in with one point after its two matches in group play. Adding to the Ukrainian club’s issues entering this fixture is the fact it has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning it won’t be at full strength in this meeting.
Needless to say, this is a huge game for both clubs for very different reasons. Barça can keep its stronghold on the group with a victory. For Dynamo Kyiv, any kind of positive result would mean a ton regarding its UCL future.
That said, let’s see how things shape up heading into this matchup.
On paper, Barcelona should have no issues bossing Dynamo Kyiv on the pitch. And oddsmakers have clearly recognized that, installing the Catalan juggernaut as close to a 17-1 favorite on the moneyline entering this game.
Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann will lead the line for Barça in this meeting, winners in 21 of its last 23 UCL matches.
The club enters this match off a disappointing 1-1 draw against Alavés in La Liga action over the weekend, where it dominated and held a 2.3 to 1.1 expected goals difference in that stalemate.
Looking at the statistical data, Barcelona more than dominates the numbers among the Group G quartet. The club has a dominant 5.1 expected goals and stellar 1.5 expected goals against, resulting in a +3.6 xGDiff and +1.83 xGDiff/90 minutes. Simply put, no one is touching Barça in this group.
The Ukrainian Premier League leader was always going to be up against it in this fixture, but adding a COVID-19 outbreak has made matters even worse.
The club had at least six players, plus a handful of backroom staff, test positive ahead of this match, putting it in even more of a pregame hole.
Dynamo Kyiv opened its UCL slate with a 2-0 loss against Italian power Juventus before settling for a 2-2 draw against Ferencváros, in which it held a 1.7-0.8 xG margin at match’s end.
The Ukrainian outfit really has very little chance getting out of this group, but will clearly not go down without a fight.
When comparing Dynamo Kyiv’s data with Barça, the advanced metrics aren’t remotely close and the definition of flat. Dymanu Kyiv sits on 2.0 expected goals and expected goals against, yielding a +0.0 xGDiff and -0.01 xGDiff/90 minutes. Bottom line, these stats are simply not going to cut it.

Barcelona-Dynamo Kyiv Picks
Let me make this easy for everyone. Barcelona is likely going to win. That we know. The only questions that need to be answered are:
- How big of a win?
- How many goals are going to be scored?
For me, this match has rout written all over it. The clubs and metrics line up for a Barça blowout, which has me backing it with confidence giving 2.5 goals.
I am also playing the total to go over 3.5 goals as well. It would not surprise me if Barça hung a four spot on its Ukrainian visitor. And if somehow Dynamo Kyiv can steal a goal in this match, it would make me feel even stronger we can hit at least four goals.
Enjoy the clinic Messi & Co. are going to put on display.
Picks: Barcelona -2.5 (-162); Total Over 3.5 Goals (-134)
