Penn State Nittany Lions Football

The Penn State Nittany Lions enter 2026 as the most unpredictable team in the Big Ten, and possibly the country. Last year's preseason No. 3 team collapsed into a six-game losing streak, cost James Franklin his job midseason, and finished 7-6 (3-6 in conference play) after Terry Smith steadied things as interim coach and beat Clemson 22-10 in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Matt Campbell took over in December after a decade at Iowa State, and he did not tinker. He added 55 new players, including 40 from the transfer portal (24 of them from his own 2025 Iowa State roster). As many as 15 transfers could start the opener against Marshall. More than half the roster is new.

Quarterback is the headline. Rocco Becht followed Campbell from Ames for his final year of eligibility, arriving as the winningest quarterback in Iowa State history with more than 9,200 passing yards and 64 touchdowns. No returning quarterback in the country has more career wins than his 26.

The supporting cast is a mix of imports and holdovers. Carson Hanson (Iowa State) and James Peoples (Ohio State) form the new backfield alongside returning back Quinton Martin. Tight end Benjamin Brahmer, another Cyclone, is arguably the best player Campbell brought with him. Chase Sowell and Brett Eskildsen give Becht familiar deep threats. The offensive line is a rebuild, as Anthony Donkoh is the only returning starter from a group that lost four of five.

On defense, D'Anton Lynn returns to his alma mater as coordinator after stops at UCLA and USC. He's rebuilt the interior with four transfer tackles weighing at least 319 pounds, headlined by Siale Taupaki. Linebackers Caleb Bacon and Kooper Ebel came from Iowa State to work alongside Tony Rojas, Penn State's top returning defender.

Penn State opened at No. 17 in the preseason coaches poll, which ranked sixth among eight ranked Big Ten teams, and well behind No. 16 Michigan in total voting points. Campbell is the first first-year head coach in program history to inherit a preseason-ranked team.

Penn State Nittany Lions Point Spreads

To cover a spread, the favorite has to win by more than the line. The underdog can still lose, just not by too much.

Here’s how it plays out:

  • Penn State -3 (-110)
  • Michigan +3 (-110)

If Penn State wins 21-20, they win the game but don’t cover. To cash a Penn State ticket in that scenario, you needed them to win by at least four. If the final score lands exactly on the spread, it’s a push and you get your money back.

Penn State Nittany Lions Over/Unders

Over/under bets are about total points. Doesn’t matter who wins. You’re just betting on how wild or quiet the scoreboard gets.

Let’s say the total is set at 55.5 in a matchup with Maryland. If the game ends 31-27, that’s 58 points and a win for the over. If it finishes 28-24, that’s just 52, and the under cashes.

Overs tend to attract more casual money, especially when Penn State is playing fast and the backfield is lighting it up. But if you think Knowles is going to slow things down on defense, maybe the under is worth a look this year.

Penn State Nittany Lions Moneylines

Not into margins or math? That’s what moneylines are for. You just pick who wins. No need to beat the number.

Here’s a typical setup:

If Penn State is a +375 underdog and pulls off the win, a $10 bet pays $47.50. That’s your $10 back, plus $37.50 in profit. If they’re the -375 favorite, it flips. You’d have to wager $37.50 just to win $10.

Moneylines are also great for parlays. Want to link Penn State’s moneyline with an over from another game? That combo could bump up your payout. Just remember, one miss and the whole thing is toast.

Penn State Nittany Lions Props

Props are where it gets personal. You can bet on specific stat lines for players like Allar, Singleton, and Allen. Passing yards, rushing touchdowns, longest run. If it’s in the box score, it might be available.

Drew Allar passing over/unders are usually popular, and depending on the opponent, you’ll see lines in the 240 to 280 yard range. Singleton’s rushing props could be right around the century mark in big games.

Keep in mind, college props aren’t legal in every state, and they’re a little more limited than NFL offerings. But when they’re available, they’re a fun way to stay engaged even if the game itself gets out of hand.

Penn State Nittany Lions Futures

This one’s for the big-picture thinkers. Futures markets let you bet on season-long outcomes, and Penn State has value if you believe they can finally break through.

As of early August, Penn State sits around +7500 to win the national title and +2000 to win the Big Ten. They’re the fifth most likely team in the conference behind Ohio State, Indiana, Oregon, USC, and Michigan.

Other futures markets include win totals, CFP appearances, and player award odds. If you’re high on the new coaching staff, there's plenty of good value to be had.

Ways to Bet on Penn State Nittany Lions

Where you place a Penn State bet can matter as much as which side you take. When you're on the chalk that often, a stale number at one book versus a fresh one at another eats into a season's worth of edge. Six operators worth keeping accounts with are listed below. Full breakdowns live in our sportsbook reviews hub.

BetMGM

Totals are BetMGM's calling card in college football, so if your read on a Nittany Lions game is about pace and points rather than sides, start here.

Support is unusually accessible, as round-the-clock chat and human beings are available on a phone line. and MGM Rewards converts wagering into hotel and dining value for anyone who travels to Vegas. The app continues to update their response times and user interfacr as well.

bet365

Depth of alternate markets aree the reason to keep bet365 open. Rather than accept whatever number is posted on a September mismatch, you can buy the line down, sell it up, or move to a first-half market entirely.

The platform's European pedigree shows up in a live-betting engine that actually holds together mid-drive, and logins rarely give trouble.

Fanatics Sportsbook

Every wager here generates FanCash, redeemable for bonus bets or team merchandise, which is a wrinkle that rewards recreational volume rather than just whales.

Offer structures themselves shift often, which means it's important to read offer terms carefully before opting in to your new user bonus.

Read our Fanatics Sportsbook promo code review.

DraftKings

Breadth is the pitch. A marquee date like White Out will have correlated parlay legs, quarterback markets and secondary props that thinner operators never bother posting.

Add solid across-the-board pricing and an app that rarely misbehaves, and it earns primary-book status for most bettors.

FanDuel

Two things keep FanDuel in heavy rotation: it prices moneylines aggressively, and it hangs numbers early.

Bettors who want a position on a Penn State game before the market has digested injury news or public money often find their opening here. Geolocation and navigation are both painless.

Read our FanDuel promo code review.

theScore Bet

theScore Bet lives inside a scores-and-news app, meaning you can go from box score to bet slip without switching contexts.

Withdrawals clear quickly and account access is uncomplicated. Prop coverage is comparatively shallow, so treat it as a second or third account for comparison rather than your main one.

Prediction Markets to Trade Penn State With

A prediction market has no house. You're trading contracts with other participants, each one worth $1 if the event occurs and nothing if it doesn't. Because prices sit between a penny and 99 cents, they translate directly into probability. For example, a Nittany Lions contract changing hands at 62 cents implies a 62% chance.

Kalshi

Of the two, Kalshi is the better fit for someone trading Penn State game to game. It lists a wide slate of individual matchups and spreads liquidity across them, keeping prices tight on anything mainstream.

This is helpful heading into games against Michigan or Ohio State. Funding is quick, ACH costs nothing, and sports fees stay modest. There are few downsides to Kalshi, gving you ample reasons to want to register.

Read our Kalshi promo code review.

Polymarket

Polymarket concentrates volume into a smaller set of high-liquidity contracts, which is why it works better for a position you intend to hold.

A Big Ten championship stake, say works just as well as trading on a game taking place in real time. Polymarket grew out of crypto, settling in USDC on Polygon, and now operates a CFTC-regulated arm for U.S. traders. Costs are minimal, and certain categories carry no fee at all.
