Penn State Nittany Lions Football

The Penn State Nittany Lions enter 2026 as the most unpredictable team in the Big Ten, and possibly the country. Last year's preseason No. 3 team collapsed into a six-game losing streak, cost James Franklin his job midseason, and finished 7-6 (3-6 in conference play) after Terry Smith steadied things as interim coach and beat Clemson 22-10 in the Pinstripe Bowl. 

Matt Campbell took over in December after a decade at Iowa State, and he did not tinker. He added 55 new players, including 40 from the transfer portal (24 of them from his own 2025 Iowa State roster). As many as 15 transfers could start the opener against Marshall. More than half the roster is new. 

Quarterback is the headline. Rocco Becht followed Campbell from Ames for his final year of eligibility, arriving as the winningest quarterback in Iowa State history with more than 9,200 passing yards and 64 touchdowns. No returning quarterback in the country has more career wins than his 26. 

The supporting cast is a mix of imports and holdovers. Carson Hanson (Iowa State) and James Peoples (Ohio State) form the new backfield alongside returning back Quinton Martin. Tight end Benjamin Brahmer, another Cyclone, is arguably the best player Campbell brought with him. Chase Sowell and Brett Eskildsen give Becht familiar deep threats. The offensive line is a rebuild, as Anthony Donkoh is the only returning starter from a group that lost four of five. 

On defense, D'Anton Lynn returns to his alma mater as coordinator after stops at UCLA and USC. He's rebuilt the interior with four transfer tackles weighing at least 319 pounds, headlined by Siale Taupaki. Linebackers Caleb Bacon and Kooper Ebel came from Iowa State to work alongside Tony Rojas, Penn State's top returning defender. 

Penn State opened at No. 17 in the preseason coaches poll, which ranked sixth among eight ranked Big Ten teams, and well behind No. 16 Michigan in total voting points. Campbell is the first first-year head coach in program history to inherit a preseason-ranked team. 

Penn State Nittany Lions Point Spreads

To cover a spread, the favorite has to win by more than the line. The underdog can still lose, just not by too much.

Here’s how it plays out:

• Penn State -3 (-110)
• Michigan +3 (-110)

If Penn State wins 21-20, they win the game but don’t cover. To cash a Penn State ticket in that scenario, you needed them to win by at least four. If the final score lands exactly on the spread, it’s a push and you get your money back.

Penn State Nittany Lions Over/Unders

Over/under bets are about total points. Doesn’t matter who wins. You’re just betting on how wild or quiet the scoreboard gets.

Let’s say the total is set at 55.5 in a matchup with Maryland. If the game ends 31-27, that’s 58 points and a win for the over. If it finishes 28-24, that’s just 52, and the under cashes.

Overs tend to attract more casual money, especially when Penn State is playing fast and the backfield is lighting it up. But if you think Knowles is going to slow things down on defense, maybe the under is worth a look this year.

If Penn State is a +375 underdog and pulls off the win, a $10 bet pays $47.50. That’s your $10 back, plus $37.50 in profit. If they’re the -375 favorite, it flips. You’d have to wager $37.50 just to win $10.

Props are where it gets personal. You can bet on specific stat lines for players like Allar, Singleton, and Allen. Passing yards, rushing touchdowns, longest run. If it’s in the box score, it might be available.

Drew Allar passing over/unders are usually popular, and depending on the opponent, you’ll see lines in the 240 to 280 yard range. Singleton’s rushing props could be right around the century mark in big games.
