In the NIL/transfer portal era, teams regularly reshuffle their personnel. But even with roster churn becoming the norm, Penn State’s roster renovation really took everything down to the studs. Forty new players entered via the portal, and nearly as many exited the program. This coincided with James Franklin’s exit and Matt Campbell’s arrival from Iowa State. Speaking of Campbell, the longtime Iowa State coach brought 24 of his players and his offensive coordinator from Ames. Taylor Mouser is a big believer in multi-tight end sets, a power running game, and occasional deep shots once the defense stacks the box. Yes, he has his Rocco Becht back to run his offense, but Becht was nothing more than a game manager last season. He finished 52nd in QBR while struggling to consistently hit receivers in the intermediate part of the field (10-19 yards, 54.2%). Beyond Becht, this offense doesn’t appear to be an explosive group. They have a strong running back room headlined by two-year starter Carson Hansen, bowl game breakout star Qutinon Martin and a former blue chipper from Ohio State (James Peoples). But the offensive line will be a work in progress as they look to replace four full-time starters (102nd in experience). Penn State’s question marks on offense make it difficult for me to envision them reaching 40 points in the opener, which makes this point spread very attractive on the Marshall side. The Thundering Herd return one of the G6’s top quarterbacks. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson was once a four-star recruit that was signed by the Florida Gators. After an unsuccessful stint at Syracuse, he’s found a home at Marshall and is thriving. The preseason Offensive Player of the Year in the Sun Belt is a dual-threat headache for opposing defenses to contain. He ran for 660 yards and six scores last year and completed nearly 67% of his passes. He returns plenty of skill position talent around him, and head coach Tony Gibson lured receivers Chris Culliver (North Carolina) and Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw (Virginia Tech) away from ACC schools to aid in CDRW’s development. The final piece of this against-the-spread puzzle is the defensive coaching upgrade Marshall made this offseason. Brad Lambert returns to Marshall after a highly successful stint six years ago, which landed him a Broyles Award nomination. He arrives on campus with a handful of three-star transfers in tow that will make this 3-3-5 defense far more formidable this fall.
