Sealed ‘Back to the Future’ VHS Tape Sells for Record $75,000 at Auction

Whether sealed VHS tapes will become a new collectible alternative asset class just like video games did is yet to be determined, but Thursday certainly generated some buzz.
A “Back to the Future” VHS tape owned by actor Thomas F. Wilson, who played Biff in the hit movie, sold for $75,000 at Heritage Auctions. That price is an all-time record for a VHS sale.

The tape comes with a tongue-in-cheek note from Wilson, which reads: "This is a VHS tape of the first release of Back to the Future, sent to me by the studio at that time. Since I knew that the VHS platform would be around forever, I saved it for later and now I can't find a VCR. Oh well. Enjoy!"
Wilson also offered to sign the case.

Wilson's sealed copies of “Back to the Future Part II” sold for $16,250, while “Back to the Future Part III” sold for $13,750.
The highest priced VHS at auction was previously a first print “Star Wars” video from 1977, which sold at Goldin Auctions for $57,000 in December.
