Diamondbacks vs Red Sox MLB Betting Preview
Everyone loves Mitch Bratt, but this pick isn't about loving D-Backs' young pitcher. His profile doesn't pop — his pitch modeling metrics are below average, he throws a fairly quiet arsenal with no pitch grading out above league average, and his major league walk rate has been shaky. He was a command-over-stuff guy in the minors, which is why my colleague Derek Carty recently targeted his under on walks, but Bratt simply doesn't move the needle for me today.
This play is strictly about the macro team-versus-team matchup. The Red Sox had a crazy hot streak earlier, but they’ve since come back down to earth. From a pure talent perspective, I project these two clubs virtually identical as wild-card caliber teams.
On offense, both teams match up almost symmetrically — I have both lineups sitting at a 108 wRC+ against today’s respective starter handedness (Bratt from the left side, Gamboa from the right). While Boston holds a slight edge in the bullpen, Arizona’s relief unit should continue to improve as guys like Justin Martinez progress on their rehab assignments.
Ultimately, Arizona holds slight offensive advantages in contact and power metrics, alongside superior defense. On a neutral field, this is virtually a coin flip, and I project the true line for the D-Backs around +111.
The line opened as high as +140 last night before getting steamed down, but there is still plenty of value on the board. I would bet Arizona down to +120.
