Every year, Time magazine selects the individual or group that has most profoundly shaped the course of humanity over the preceding 12 months. In the 2026 edition, several heavyweight contenders headline the field, ranging from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and newly inaugurated Pope Leo XIV, to Artificial Intelligence standing as a contender in its own right.

Before breaking down the current prediction market odds and dissecting how the midterm elections reshaped this market, make sure to grab our Kalshi promo code and download the Action Network app to get the best trading insights and real-time market data.

Time Person of the Year 2026 Odds Today: Mamdani, Pope Leo XIV, Talarico

Right now, Kalshi traders believe that Time will name New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as the preeminent figure of 2026. The progressive mayor leads the board with 29% odds, even after experiencing a slight pullback over the last days.

Close behind is Pope Leo XIV, who has experienced a slow but steady surge since late September, positioning him in second place with an 18% implied chance.

The top three rounds out with Texas’s newly elected senator, James Talarico, one of the defining breakout figures of the midterm elections. While Talarico briefly overtook the second spot on the board, his odds have since settled back to its current 14% mark.

Did the Midterms Change the Race? Talarico and the Democratic Wave

The midterm elections were undeniably one of the most closely watched events of recent months, and the ripple effects quickly impacted prediction markets tracking Time’s Person of the Year.

James Talarico’s surge into third place on the board stems directly from those midterm results. His historic victory in Texas catapulted him into national prominence, cementing his status as the ascendant face of the Democratic Party heading into 2028. A similar dynamic played out with Abdul El-Sayed and Jon Ossoff, albeit on a more modest scale.

At the same time, one of the biggest casualties of the midterms was Donald Trump. As late as September, Trump was trading at roughly a 13% implied probability. Today, he has fallen entirely outside the top tier, trading at 5%, and has increased odds of impeachment.

Why Trump Fell From Early Favorite

Back in April, Donald Trump was the absolute favorite to be named Time’s Person of the Year, but his odds have been in free fall ever since.

Trump’s slide stems directly from the Republican collapse in the midterm elections. While standard political cycles dictate that the governing party underperforms in midterms, the sheer volume of lost seats, along with traditionally red battlegrounds like Texas, Kansas, and South Carolina flipping blue, is a huge blow to the Trump administration.

Beyond the elections, another crucial factor is the steep decline in presidential approval ratings. Trump’s popularity has been dragged down by his foreign policy maneuvers across the Middle East and the ensuing economic fallout felt throughout key swaths of the American electorate.

Even so, it is crucial to remember that Time selects its Person of the Year “for better or worse.” Even if the Trump administration endures severe missteps, he could still be selected as the single most consequential figure of the past 12 months.

AI as a Candidate After “Architects of AI” Won Last Year

Last year, the magazine spotlighted the architects of artificial intelligence as its defining figures, recognizing the massive imprint AI has left on modern life. This year, the human creator is absent from the board, leaving only the creation itself.

Indeed, among the contenders listed on Kalshi’s board, AI appears as an umbrella entity encompassing the full spectrum of tools and models that have reshaped daily life across the globe over the past 12 months. Right now, AI trades on the lower-tier of candidates, with 5% odds. Even OpenAI 6.1 Astra release odds have nosedived.

When Does Time Announce Person of the Year 2026?

Time typically unveils its Person of the Year during the first or second week of December. Following the rollout of an official shortlist on NBC’s Today show, the franchise reveals its final cover selection across digital platforms, print editions, and a dedicated television broadcast.

How Time Picks: Influence, For Better or Worse

Time’s editorial mandate does not serve as an endorsement, lifetime achievement award, or popularity contest. The designation recognizes the individual or group that exerted the greatest influence on the news and global landscape over the past 12 months, for better or worse.
