Crystal Palace vs. Chelsea Picks, Parlay

Leg 1: Both Teams to Score — Yes (-125)
Leg 2: Jean-Philippe Mateta To Score (+275)
Leg 3: Over 32.5 Total Tackles (-111)

Mateta is Crystal Palace’s target man. Like Ismaila Sarr and Eberechi Eze behind him, has improved his game under Oliver Glasner. He possessed the raw attributes to overwhelm Premier League defences, but Palace’s manager has seemingly been able to extract more from him. Last season, the Frenchman scored 14 goals in 37 matches in the Premier League. Before that, in 2023/24, he recorded 16 in 35 games.

Mateta doesn’t record the same volume of shots as Eze (3.48 per90 – 27th in Europe’s top five leagues in 2024/25), but at 2.31 per90, he’s a reliable shot taker.

Couple Mateta’s willingness to shoot with the prospect of him taking penalties, and it makes the price for him to score inviting. Mateta converted both of his penalty kicks last season. A confident strike from the spot against Liverpool in the Community Shield followed that last weekend. He also dispatched the opening penalty in the shootout.

The Eagles striker also scored in the most recent head-to-head at Selhurst Park. In that instance, Palace dispossessed Cole Palmer in midfield and instantly progressed the ball forward to Sarr to find Eze, who then located Mateta to tap home in the 18-yard box. If Mateta can get close to conjuring a seventh-highest Expected Goals total in the Premier League like he did in 2024/25 (13.5xG – 0.46xG per90), then he should be on your shortlist at the current odds.

Crystal Palace vs. Chelsea Betting Analysis

Chelsea players were given 21 days of rest following their Club World Cup exploits, before returning to preseason training on August 4. Crystal Palace’s preseason, on the other hand, was structured to be match-ready for the Community Shield against Liverpool on August 10.

The 2-2 draw at Wembley and subsequent win on penalties suggest Palace are in a great goalscoring shape. Palace should, logically, be a week or two ahead of Chelsea right now in terms of readiness and match sharpness.

Enzo Maresca could opt to play eleven players on the opening day who didn't feature in the Club World Cup. They’re blessed with a large and talented squad. But if a jaded Cole Palmer and his peers feature from the start, or Chelsea heavily rotate, we can be confident that Crystal Palace will fancy their chances of registering a goal.

In a 2024/25 Premier League season averaging 2.93 goals per 90 (split home goals: 1.51 and away goals: 1.42), Oliver Glasner's side registered BTTS – Yes in more than half of their away days (10/19).

Chelsea's BTTS – yes strike rate at Stamford Bridge last season reached 12 in 19 outings
