As Donald Trump’s second term approaches its first anniversary, the 2028 presidential race is already rippling through today’s political landscape. Both major parties are quietly — and sometimes not so quietly — debating who will lead them into the post-Trump era.
The 48th president of the United States will be decided on November 7, 2028. With Trump constitutionally barred from seeking a third term, the field is wide open. There are no official candidates yet, but a number of politicians — and even a few figures from outside politics — have already expressed interest in pursuing their party’s nomination.
For those looking to place a long-shot wager on who will be the next presidential election winner, one platform allows users in all 50 states to put real money on the outcome. That platform is Kalshi, which blends traditional financial markets with advanced prediction systems.

2028 Presidential Election Winner Odds
Vice President JD Vance is the GOP’s most natural heir if the party wants to maintain its current direction. Firmly aligned with the MAGA movement, Vance recently said he will “sit down” with Trump after the midterms to discuss a potential 2028 run.
If that matchup materializes, it would likely be against California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who currently holds a slight edge to become the Democratic nominee.
Those numbers don’t necessarily reflect the Democratic Party’s voting preferences as much as they reveal a lack of a clear successor after Joe Biden’s presidency and Kamala Harris’ defeat last year. In that context, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is in third place, representing the party’s most progressive wing and a radical change to the current direction.
Trump himself is listed with a small chance as well. While the 22nd Amendment explicitly bars him from serving more than two terms, he has repeatedly hinted at remaining in the White House — without clarifying how he would do so.
If Trump is indeed unable to run, as the Constitution states, and Vance loses support over the next few years, the next name positioned to continue the current GOP legacy is Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The Democrats’ leadership vacuum is evident farther down the list as well, where several names cluster with smaller odds: former Vice President Kamala Harris, Former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.
On the Republican side, a handful of potential long shots also remain in the conversation: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, and the president’s eldest son, Donald J. Trump Jr.
What is Kalshi?
Different than a traditional sportsbook and available in all 50 states, Kalshi allows users to make predictions across several unique markets, including sports, entertainment, elections and even weather.
Kalshi operates on a contract-based system where users buy "contracts" (priced between 1–99 cents) based on whether they believe a specific event will happen. The price of each contract fluctuates in real time based on market sentiment and like the stock market, traders can sell positions early to lock in profits (or minimize losses).
