The Border War returns for a second straight season, and No. 23 Missouri (1-0) makes its first true road trip to Lawrence in 21 years. The Tigers took last year's meeting 42-31 in Columbia as a 5.5-point home favorite, which shows how little respect this number gives Kansas (1-0).
Money leans Jayhawk. The line opened Missouri -6.5 and now sits at -5.5, while the moneyline shortened from -235 to -210. The total has not budged off 50.
Missouri's biggest problem shows up in the backfield. Star running back Ahmad Hardy stays out as he recovers from a May gunshot wound, and he has yet to return to practice, leaving Jamal Roberts and Xai'Shaun Edwards to shoulder the load after Malae Fonoti's season-ending ACL injury. Left tackle Cayden Green looks on track to return, which steadies a front still missing right tackle Josh Atkins.
Quarterback Austin Simmons opened sharp, going 17-of-19 for 252 yards and four scores against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Kansas answered with a 51-6 win over Long Island behind new starter Isaiah Marshall, who threw for 246 yards and added 49 more on the ground. Neither performance proves much against FCS opposition.
Give me Kansas +5.5. Marshall's legs stress a rebuilt Missouri front seven that hasn't faced a Power Four offense. Lance Leipold's offense chews clock, and a Tigers ground game without Hardy lacks the muscle to close out a hostile fourth quarter. Expect a tense, possession-heavy night that keeps the scoreboard modest and drags the total under.
