Fortinet Championship Preview

The PGA Tour is back after a two-week hiatus with the 2023 Fortinet Championship.

With the Tour moving back to a calendar-year schedule in 2024, the seven FedExCup Fall events will provide golfers outside of the top 50 on the points list an opportunity to qualify for the 2024 signature events while these golfers also jockey to stay inside the top 125 and keep their PGA Tour cards for next season.

The Fortinet Championship kicks off the FedExCup Fall in Napa at Silverado Resort (North Course) where two-time defending champion Max Homa is the betting favorite at +750.

Homa, who will head to Rome after the tournament to compete for the United States in the Ryder Cup next week, is looking for his third consecutive Fortinet Championship victory after winning here to start each of the past two seasons. Homa closed the regular season and playoffs strong as he recorded five consecutive top-12 finishes from the Genesis Scottish Open through the Tour Championship.

Homa's teammate on the US Ryder Cup team, Justin Thomas, opened with the second-shortest outright betting odds this week at bet365 at +1500 but has drifted to +1700. Unlike Homa, who finished ninth in the FedExCup Standings, Thomas will look to finish as one of the top-10 players in the FedExCup Fall in order to qualify for the first two signature events of the season because he was outside of the top 50 on the points list (71st).

Thomas was a controversial captain's pick to join the US Ryder Cup team, and he is looking to play his way into form this week. This is his first appearance at the Fortinet Championship since 2020, and he has three top-eight finishes in five starts at Silverado.

Sahith Theegala is the third and final golfer with odds of 20/1 or shorter to win outright this week at +1500 after opening at +2000. The Pepperdine product was the bubble boy who just barely missed out on playing in the Tour Championship as he was 31st in the FedExCup Standings following the BMW Championship.

After missing three consecutive cuts before the playoffs, Theegala flashed form with a T13 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and a T15 at the BMW Championship. This is Theegala's fourth Fortinet Championship appearance, and he has two top-14 results in three starts in Napa.

Course Preview

Silverado Resort (North Course) is a 7,123-yard par-72 with four par-5s, four par-3s and 10 par-4s. Ben Harmon designed the course in 1955, and it was renovated by Robert Trent Jones in 1966 and Johnny Miller in 2011.

The course features a mix of Poa Annua and Bentgrass greens and 2.5-inch rough, which is a mix of Bluegrass and ryegrass. The fairways are also a mix of Bermudagrass, Poa Annua and rye. Overall, there are 53 bunkers at Silverado, and water is in play on just two of the 18 holes.

Historically, Strokes Gained: Putting and SG: Approach have been the two most correlated metrics with total strokes gained at Silverado. SG: Around the Green has been more correlated with total strokes gained at Silverado than at an average course on Tour, while SG: Off the Tee is less correlated.

Driving distance is less correlated with total strokes gained than usual, but driving accuracy has been more correlated with total strokes gained than at an average course on Tour.

Fortinet Championship Past Winners

Homa, Stewart Cink, Cameron Champ, Kevin Tway, Bae Sang-Moon and Jimmy Walker are among past champions in the field for this week's Fortinet Championship.
