Detroit Tigers Betting Preview

Entering the year, the Tigers looked like the runaway favorites in the AL Central. However, they’re hovering around .500, but won seven of their last ten games.

AJ Hinch will give the ball to his prized free agent acquisition, Framber Valdez. In his first season in Detroit, Valdez boasts a 3.75 ERA with a 3.10 xERA and a 3.07 FIP.

Valdez pitched great in all but one outing — and the bad one was terrible. He allowed eight runs in five innings to the Twins, but went 6+ innings with one or fewer earned runs in the other three.

The ground ball demon is up to his typical shenanigans — posting a 57.8% ground ball rate (89th percentile) and a 2.4% barrel rate (87th percentile). Valdez also has yet to surrender a homer during his time in Detroit.

Very few teams have bigger platoon splits than the Tigers, who have a woeful 64 wRC+ against southpaw pitching and a 109 wRC+ versus right-handers. The sample size is small, as the Tigers have the second-fewest plate appearances against lefties. They also have zero home runs and a .049 ISO against them, displaying very little ability to do damage.

Hinch is all about platoons. Two of his best hitters, Kerry Carpenter and Riley Greene, usually sit against lefties. Just look at game one of this series when Ranger Suarez gave up just two hits in eight innings. For the platoon to work, Hinch needs Jahmai Jones and Matt Vierling to do damage.

Boston Red Sox Betting Preview

The Red Sox fell to 8-12 after losing game two to the Tigers, but a win in the penultimate game would get them close to .500.

Just like Valdez, Garrett Crochet's worst outing of the season came in Minnesota. The Multi-time All-Star was left for dead, allowing 10 runs in 1 2/3 innings, and his last pitch clocked in at 92.7 mph. The dip in velocity was a concern, but Crochet pointed to sequencing as the issue — not an injury or pitch tipping.

I'm inclined to believe Crochet, who now has a 7.85 ERA, but it was 3.27 before his last outing. Facing the Tigers should be a terrific match for Crochet. He can focus on commanding his stuff and not stress about real damage against a lineup that does very little damage.

The stuff is still there, so I'll rely on the two-year sample of Crochet being a total stud.

Offense has been hard to come by for the Red Sox, which rank 23rd in MLB with an 88 wRC+. They have just 12 homers this year — tied for last in the league, and they're second to last with a .114 ISO.

Only three Boston hitters have multiple homers — Willson Contreras and Wilyer Abreu have three, and Trevor Story has two. Contreras and Abreu are two of three Red Sox hitters with a wRC+ over 100.

Alex Cora needed his young studs, Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer, to progress. It remains a work in progress, though, as Anthony has a 94 wRC+ and Mayer has a 54.

Tigers vs Red Sox Pick, Betting Analysis

The under hit in both of the first two games of the series. Boston could only muster one run in each game, and Detroit scored four on Saturday after posting a bagel on Friday.

With a pair of proven ace-level arms on the hill against a pair of shaky offenses, I expect another low-scoring showdown. Plus, this should be a rainy game — hopefully it gets played, but the conditions don't favor hitters.

Pick: Under 7 (play to 6.5)
