Story: Back the Road Dog in the First Half

Marlins’ right-hander Janson Junk is set to take the bump on Saturday afternoon in the second of a three-game road trip in Detroit.

Casey Mize will take the mound for the Tigers in their home stadium at Comerica Park.

Junk has had a stellar start to his 2026 campaign as Miami’s righty, posting a 3.09 ERA on the season, allowing four runs over 11 2/3 innings.

After six years without making an impact in the Big Leagues, the right-hander showed some substantial improvement in 2025.

For the Tigers, right-hander Casey Mize has not had the same luck thus far, posting an ERA of 5.23 over his first two starts in 2026. Detroit’s righty will surely be looking for a bounce-back outing in Saturday’s interleague contest.

Given a sizable edge in the starting pitching department for the Marlins, I feel the road dog has some great value to prevail in the first five innings.

While Mize has not faced the majority of a very young Miami lineup, Junk has had far more experience against a Tigers lineup he has fared very well against in 2025.

Aside from Detroit's outfielder Kerry Carpenter, who is 2-for-3 with a homer off the Marlins’ righty, Junk has been very solid when matched up with the rest of Detroit's hitters — Riley Greene and Zach McKinstry, amongst several others, are hitless over several plate appearances versus the right-hander.

Kerry Carpenter Over 1.5 HRR

If you have followed a number of my previous SGP articles, you know I typically pair my preferred side with a player prop from the opposing roster to extract maximum value from the game at hand.

Given the negative correlation between the two, the payout is typically magnified substantially upon being paired with a prop from the opponents, which in this case is Carpenter.

While Detroit’s lefty has gotten off to a very slow start to his 2026 season, he has bounced back big time with several homers over the past week.

Junk has far better splits matched up with right-handed hitters compared to lefties, which is another reason I favor targeting Carpenter in this matchup.

Picks:

  • Marlins F5 ML
  • Kerry Carpenter Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
