The Detroit Tigers host the Minnesota Twins on Friday, June 27, 2025. First pitch from Comerica Park is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET; the game will be broadcast on FanDuel Sports Detroit and Twins TV.

Minnesota enters Friday 11 1/2 games back of Detroit in the AL Central. The Twins may opt for a bullpen game to start this series, a strategy familiar to the Tigers, who will turn to Sawyer-Gipson Long at home tonight.

Minnesota Twins Betting Preview: Injuries and Streaks Abound

After a lengthy rain delay, the Twins routed the Mariners 10-1 to salvage a split yesterday. Trevor Larnach, Matt Wallner, and Brooks Lee each homered, with Larnach leading the way with three runs batted in.

The Twins may have an argument for being the streakiest team in baseball this season. They began the year 0-4, which led to a 13-20 start. Then, they ripped off 13 wins in a row, but now find themselves slumping again as they are just 8-16 in June.

Injuries have not helped matters, as third basemen Royce Lewis has played just 30 games this season. He is beginning a rehab assignment today, so his return may be imminent.

Pablo Lopez was leading the staff with a 2.82 ERA, but he suffered a right teres major muscle strain and was recently transferred to the 60-day IL.

Without Lopez, the Twins have posted a 6.19 ERA in June and have fallen to 21st in ERA for the season. As of this writing, manager Rocco Baldelli has not named a starter for today's game, but it may be an opener followed by David Festa.

The Twins' bats may need to lead the way to a victory in the series opener, and that will begin with Byron Buxton.

Despite the team's struggles, Buxton has been on fire in June with seven home runs, 18 RBI, and a 1.064 OPS. He has accumulated 3.0 WAR to go along with his 17 home runs and 13 stolen bases, and that has put him in contention to be named an All-Star for the second time as a reserve.

Detroit Tigers Betting Preview: Offense Leading the Way

Last season, it was the Twins whom the Tigers walked down after going 31-13 to secure the final AL Wild Card spot.

Detroit finished a game away from reaching the ALCS as it lost to the Guardians in five games. However, the Tigers have proven that the run was no fluke. They enter tonight's game with the best record in the AL and tied with the Dodgers for the best record overall.

Last year's run was fueled by "pitching chaos" and openers. Last year, Detroit's openers had a 2.05 ERA, and the bulk relievers that followed them had a 3.65 ERA.

Injuries to Casey Mize, Reese Olson, and Jackson Jobe (out for the season) have forced manager AJ Hinch to reprise the strategy again, perhaps more often than he would like.

This year's openers have a 4.50 ERA while the bulk relievers have a 4.89 ERA. The team did get a more traditional start from the 34-year-old Dietrich Enns, who tossed five scoreless innings in yesterday's shutout victory of the A's.

Sawyer Gipson-Long followed Brant Hurter in last Saturday's loss to Tampa, but he is in line to get the start today.

When Detroit's pitching has struggled, its offense has carried the weight, which was not always the case last season. The Tigers rank in the top two in the AL in runs per game, total bases, and OPS.

Riley Greene continues to quietly ascend to superstar status as he is tied for fifth in the American League with 17 homers and third with 61 RBI behind just Cal Raleigh and Aaron Judge.

In June, Greene is slashing .368/.417/.609 with 13 extra-base hits and 21 RBI. He is one of three Tigers named as finalists in the All-Star Voting, along with Gleyber Torres and Javier Baez.

Torres has been a StatCast darling this season, ranking in the 90th percentile or better in several categories, including xBA (.297), strikeout rate, and walk rate. He has eight home runs, 40 RBI, 41 walks against 36 strikeouts, and a .386 OPS that is 11th in the MLB. Torres has also played a role in Baez's turnaround after three disappointing years in Detroit, marking the beginning of his tenure.

This year, Baez has nine home runs, 36 RBI, and a 2.3 WAR while contributing all over the diamond defensively. Spencer Torkelson has been another surprise turnaround story with 17 home runs on the year after not having a solidified spot on the opening day roster. Torkelson got the Tigers on the board yesterday with a solo shot in the first.

Baez and Torkelson provided much-needed balance to a lineup heavy on left-handed hitters, along with the switch-hitting Wenceel Perez. Since returning from the IL, Perez has six home runs, 15 runs batted in, and a .983 OPS.

Twins vs Tigers Prediction, Betting Analysis

The Twins and Tigers have split the last 10 meetings in this AL Central rivalry, but the Tigers took two of three from the Twins in April.

That includes a game started by Festa, who could be the bulk reliever that Baldelli calls upon today. Festa is coming off a rough outing after he allowed eight runs on 12 hits in 4 and 2/3 innings against the Brewers last Sunday.

Now, he will face a Tigers offense that has scored seven runs or more in six of its last nine games.

The Tigers are also 28-13 at home this season, while the Twins are just 17-25 away from Target Field. The Tigers have won two of their last three series, and I like them to get started on winning another with a victory over the Twins today.

Pick: Tigers ML (-125, BetMGM)
