Charlie Wright's Reds vs Cubs Best Bet: Starters Should Stifle Scoring
We have solid pitching weather at Wrigley Field with winds blowing slightly in. Meteorologist Kevin Roth's WeatherEdge tool shows an 18.1% decrease in home runs and a 9.1% decrease in scoring based on 117 games matching these conditions. Those aren't overwhelming numbers, but a modest boost for fly ball pitchers is significant when we're targeting Andrew Abbott.
If he had a few more innings, Abbott would rank behind only Paul Skenes in ERA. His season-long mark is finally above 2.00 after a lackluster outing to begin July, but he's bounced back by allowing two or fewer earned runs in his past four starts. Abbott has continued to lean into his soft fly balls approach this season, ranking in the eighth percentile in ground-ball rate and the 94th percentile in hard-hit rate. He's also trimmed the walk rate to a career-best 7.5%.
Cade Horton seems to be putting it together. After a brutal June, the rookie has tossed scoreless outings in four of his past five appearances and hasn't allowed an earned run since before the All-Star break. He's certainly run hot with BABIP, but the skills look solid. He gets a nice matchup here against a Cincinnati offense that ranks 25th in wRC+ against right-handed pitching since the start of July.
