Phillies vs Twins MLB Betting Preview

Philadelphia Phillies Betting Preview

The Phillies front office made an intriguing deadline gamble by acquiring Luis Arraez, a move that will force a significant defensive reshuffle for the stretch run. Bryce Harper returned to the outfield, Bryson Stott shifted to third base, and Alec Bohm moved across the diamond, all in an effort to fit Arraez's bat into the lineup.

Arraez has been hitting in the cleanup spot despite his complete lack of power. Since 2021, Arraez owns a .348 batting average with runners in scoring position, the highest mark in MLB, which is an obvious explanation for the unconventional setup. The Phillies are 4-5 with Arraez in the lineup and have averaged 4.33 runs per game, with pitching becoming the team's concern during this small sample of the new-look offense.

For a lineup driven by proven elite left-handed sluggers Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper, Philadelphia has been surprisingly average versus right-handed pitching this season — the Phillies are running a 93 wRC+ against right-handed pitching on the season and a 101 wRC+ against the side since the start of June.

Philadelphia's recent bullpen struggles have been well documented, with the unit significantly underachieving, running a 4.55 ERA over the past 30 days, costing the team in several highly winnable matchups. Jose Alvarado and Orion Kerkering have both been in dreadful form of late, but the combination of setup man Jonathan Bowlan and Jhoan Duran remains rock-solid, while the addition of Brooks Raley should prove beneficial.

The Phillies bullpen is fairly well-rested entering this game, which may be relevant with Aaron Nola facing a disciplined Twins lineup that can wear down starters in a hurry. Nola has stabilized following a horrid start to the season, but he's still running some unconvincing numbers across the past 10 starts (4.97 ERA, 4.03 xFIP).

Nola has leaned heavily on off-speed and breaking pitches to compensate for diminished velocity this season, but the approach hasn't prevented hard contact, as opposing batters have posted a 41.5% hard-hit rate. His 86.7% zone-contact rate is also concerning against a Twins lineup that boasts the third-lowest out-of-zone swing rate among MLB teams.

Minnesota Twins Betting Preview

The Twins have quietly produced the eighth-most runs in MLB this season with a 108 wRC+ against right-handed pitching and an uber-low strikeout rate.

When Byron Buxton and Royce Lewis are both healthy and in good form, it feels as though the unit is a little underrated, likely just in part due to how uncommon that has been over the last two seasons.

Lewis has slugged .516 with an expected weighted on-base percentage of .357 since the All-Star break, while Josh Bell has also picked it up with a 119 wRC+ during the stretch. Minnesota's lineup could potentially get a huge boost tonight, as Buxton may return to the lineup, though at the time of writing his status is yet to be confirmed.

The Twins shored up their struggling bullpen at the deadline by acquiring A.J. Minter, Jeff Hoffman and Tommy Nance, and each of the three has been effective thus far, pitching to a combined ERA of 1.77 across 20 1/3 innings. Hoffman has pitched to a 1.37 ERA across his past 26 1/3 innings, but his dominance seems to be flying under the radar after his struggles in high-leverage situations earlier on in the year.

Taj Bradley has continued to build on what has been a strong bounce-back campaign, pitching to a 3.30 ERA, 3.88 xERA and 3.88 xFIP over his past 10 appearances. His command remains a concern at times, as it has throughout his career, but Bradley possesses excellent stuff, evidenced by his 110 Stuff+ rating. He can be tough to handle when his command is on point.

Phillies vs Twins Pick, Betting Analysis

The Phillies hold a superior 64-58 record playing out of a much more competitive division than the Twins, but they look to be overvalued with most sportsbooks essentially pricing this game as a pick 'em.

Minnesota's lineup has been hard on righties and should match up well versus Nola, while Bradley will offer a tougher test for the Phillies lineup.

Minnesota's bullpen also looks much less concerning following its recent additions, while Philly's middle-relief options are shaky.

At -110 or better, there's value on the Twins in this exciting matchup.

Pick: Twins ML (-110 or Better)
