Phillies vs Giants MLB Betting Preview

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies just came back from a four-run deficit to win game one of this series in San Francisco. Their offense was stagnant to begin the game, but they figured out Adrian Houser by the third time through the order.

This offense overall has name value, yet they have not put together a consistent start to the season.

Philadelphia ranks last in runs scored among the NL East teams thus far, with only the Braves playing one more game than the rest of their division.

Pitching is carrying this Phillies team. Between the rotation and bullpen, the stars are showing up. Aaron Nola, Jesus Luzardo, Jhoan Duran, and today's starter, Cristopher Sanchez, are holding their own through two weeks of regular-season baseball.

This quartet of pitchers has given up just eight runs through 41 combined innings.

The offense will eventually wake up. There is too much talent to fail, and their sleeping giant, Bryce Harper, is finally making some noise. He was quiet in Coors with just two hits in their three-game series, but a three-hit, three RBI game last night could remedy his slump.

2026 lineup additions Adolis Garcia and rookie Justin Crawford have not made significant impacts yet, but they could be key pieces to another strong offensive season.

With six wins and four losses, neither the Phillies nor their fans need to panic. The ship will get right, especially with Cristopher Sanchez on the mound every five games.

San Francisco Giants

Meanwhile, the Giants' ship has several more leaky holes than the Phillies'. Their offense is stagnant, their rotation is top-heavy between Logan Webb and today's starter, Robbie Ray, and their bullpen is unreliable.

There is talent on the Giants' roster, but there is no depth. The trade for Rafael Devers last season did not hurt them, yet it has not helped them to start this season. The Giants rank second-last in team wRC+ and last in wOBA.

Their team ERA ranks 22nd in the league, despite playing in one of MLB's most pitcher-friendly home parks. It is still early, but the signs of a complete failure are looming for the 2026 Giants.

This team does not have an identity. After making significant offseason changes to the front office and managerial staff, they are still stuck in roster purgatory with nowhere to go but the middle at best.

They cannot compete with the Padres, let alone the Dodgers. In all likelihood, this team will sell by the deadline if they know what is good for them. For now, they are ripe to continue betting against them in all phases.

Phillies vs Giants Picks

Robbie Ray allowing walks is like lemonade on a hot day, or hot tea on a cold one. He limited them well in his first start against the Yankees, but the Mets forced his walk issues to rear their head, with three in 5 1/3 innings.

Despite rostering two of the most patient hitters in the league–Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber–the Phillies are not the heaviest walk team. However, Adolis Garcia, Trea Turner, and Alec Bohm all walk at a higher rate versus left-handed pitching. Also, offseason addition Dylan Moore owns a career 12.4% rate versus lefties.

While Ray did mitigate his walk issues during his 2021 to 2022 peak, they have crept back significantly. Ray's walk rate since 2023 is 10.1%. His 9.7% walk rate last season was fifth in baseball among all pitchers with at least 150 innings pitched. Expect several free passes on the bases today.

Pick: Robbie Ray Over 2.5 Walks
