Padres vs Pirates MLB Betting Preview
The Padres are on the short list for the most disappointing team of 2026. They enter this game with a 5-6 record and a fresh loss to Pittsburgh on Tuesday.
Taking the hill for San Diego is Michael King. He had a mixed bag in his first two outings. He tossed a scoreless five innings against the Tigers to begin his season, but walked five hitters. In his next outing, King allowed four runs and seven hits across 5 2/3 innings.
I like King, but a few things worry me.
He throws a sinker close to 40% of the time, but got ground balls just 38% of the time last year and 40% so far this year. In the past, King threw harder and struck more hitters out with a four-pitch mix that features a nasty sweeper.
However, King's K/9 has declined over the past two years to around 9.28, and he is walking 4.28 per nine. He still doesn't get hit hard, but the lack of K's and walk issues are troublesome.
The lineup is the main reason for San Diego's shaky start. The Padres boast an 84 wRC+, which ranks 24th among MLB lineups.
Very few teams are hitting for less power than the Padres, who have just five homers (29th) and a .118 ISO (27th).
Fernando Tatis Jr. has to play better. Odds are, he's just slumping as every hitter does. But he's hitting a woeful .195 with a 25% strikeout rate (worst since 2021) and zero extra base hits.
How cool does it feel for the Pirates to be relevant again? The fans in Pittsburgh are finally rowdy again thanks to a fiery 7-4 start.
One of the few holdovers from the lean days of Pirates baseball is Mitch Keller, who draws the start today.
Keller is a very solid middle-of-the-rotation arm. He's finished the last three seasons with an ERA ranging from 4.19 to 4.25. He throws strikes, eats innings, but doesn't generate many swings and misses.
The biggest difference between last year's Pirates team and this year's is the offseason.
They addressed their lack of firepower by adding Brandon Lowe and Ryan O'Hearn. While neither is a star, both are former All-Stars who crush righty pitching. O'Hearn leads Pittsburgh with a 210 wRC+, and Brandon Lowe is second with a 177.
Another emerging bat is O'Neil Cruz. He was touted as a future star in his prospect days, but he largely failed to deliver. So far, Cruz is hitting .310 with four homers and a 169 wRC+.
In all, the Pirates rank 11th among MLB lineups in wRC+ (106). They also walk 11.9% of the time, which ranks sixth, and they also are sixth with 12 homers.
This Pirates team can hit.
The bridge to the back end of the pen is a bit shaky for the Pirates. Don Kelly is alternating closers with Dennis Santana and Gregory Soto. That pair has done well, but the other arms in middle relief have struggled.
It would serve Pittsburgh well to get six innings from Keller to shorten the game.

Padres vs Pirates Picks
I'm rolling with the Pirates.
They match up well against King, as Lowe, Cruz, and O'Hearn should be able to handle the right-handed pitcher.
The line shows two evenly matched teams, but the Pirates look like the better team.
