Story: Tigers Roll Behind Rookie Sensation
I like the Tigers for several reasons, starting with what I expect to be a pitching edge.
Cardinals starting pitcher Dustin May pitched well with the Dodgers, but he fell apart toward the end of his time in L.A., and he didn’t pitch well in Boston (5.40 ERA).
So far, he’s brought those struggles with him to Missouri, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits across four innings in his 2026 debut (Tampa Bay).
May has pretty stark platoon splits, which should make him uber-vulnerable against the left-handed Kevin McGonigle.
Across his first 18 at-bats against righties, the Tigers rookie has six hits, two doubles, and a triple. He’s also drawn three walks, which could prove valuable considering May’s command issues — his fastball control has been a mess lately.
Considering those command issues, May should rely more on his off-speed stuff, but I expect McGonigle should handle that with ease — he’s an excellent contact hitter who rarely chases.
McGonigle and the other Tigers lefties should provide enough run support for starting pitcher Jack Flaherty, who struggled in his 2026 debut (4.1 IP, 2 ER vs. SDP) but has been a model of consistency since moving to Detroit.
The Tigers were one of the World Series favorites heading into the 2026 season, but have had a relatively slow start to the year. I think Saturday is a great spot to back the home team, with a lineup that boasts way more pop and features several young studs.
Picks:
- Tigers ML
- Kevin McGonigle Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
Parlay Odds: +155 (bet365)
