Alabama vs St. John's College Basketball Betting Preview

Alabama Basketball

Alabama comes off a 29-point victory against North Dakota, and we got exactly what we expected the Alabama team to look like. They play at a fast pace, with the third-fastest tempo of all games played so far, and an average possession time of just 14 seconds. They won’t shoot a lot of threes because they often get opponents in transition and attack the basket for easy buckets.

They again have strong guard play behind Labaron Philon Jr. and Houston Mallette. They just combined for 37 points and 11 assists. Alabama does struggle with some turnovers, as it just committed 15 on Monday.

That’s typically for teams that like to play the way they do. They do have quite a bit of D-1 experience, something that will translate well as they continue a non-conference schedule that includes St. John’s, Purdue, Illinois, and Gonzaga. That’s four straight Top 25 matchups.

The experience will also do them well as they head to #5 St. John’s. This team will be road tested this season, something they can build on for the tournament in March.

St. John's Basketball

St. John’s sleepwalked through their first game of the year, scoring more points than they did all last season. Their offense shot 56.5% from the field, including 42.1% from the arc.

St. John’s identity last season was defense, with the best defensive efficiency in program history. But they just gave up 74 points to Quinnipiac.

The Red Storm comes in with expectations higher than they’ve been in decades, and behind Pitino’s leadership, those expectations are worth it.

Good guard play and up-tempo play will make St. John’s a tough beat for any team in the Nation. Ranked #5, they are just a few games away from a possible #1 ranking.

They’ll face a ranked Iowa St, Baylor, Mississippi, and Kentucky, all before conference play.

Alabama vs. St. John's Betting Analysis

Bottom line, we expect this to be a fast-paced game. Both teams will look to get shots early in the clock and push the attack to the basket.

We can also expect defense to play a major role in the overall pace of the game. That will mean we have an offense that can attack the basket and create opportunities to get to the line.

Both teams shoot well enough from the field, behind good shot selection. The Red Storm defense will be a focal point this season.

The total sits around 168.5, and I like it all the way up to 171.5. The only reservation we have is the early morning tip.

But a top 15 matchup should provide enough juice and adrenaline for this to be high octane all the way through.

My Pick: Over 168.5 (Play to 171.5)
