Arkansas-Pine Bluff Basketball

The Golden Lions aren't a great watch. So far this season, Arkansas-Pine Bluff is winless in eight tries, in some part due to the economic realities of college basketball. The Golden Lions have played eight straight road games, facing the 11th-toughest schedule in college basketball.

Those road games have stretched across the nation, touching three of continental America's four time zones (Mountain being the exception). Arkansas-Pine Bluff is on this whirlwind tour, collecting buy game checks in exchange for an easy opponent.

KenPom pegs the Golden Lions as a bottom-three team in the sport. In eight games this season, Arkansas-Pine Bluff has lost by single-digits just once, at KenPom's 250th-ranked team, Portland.

The Golden Lions play an up-tempo attack, looking to dribble drive into the paint. That's a lot tougher when shooting just 28% from deep and a dismal 43% inside the arc.

Pine Bluff hunts contact and wants to earn trips to the free-throw line, but again, that's tougher without the threat of shooting to counterbalance.

Defensively, things have been even worse for Pine Bluff, as it's allowing the nation's highest points per game (98.1). The Golden Lions allowed a Miami (OH) team that had yet to top 90 points against a Division I opponent to put up 111 points, with 11 made 3s.

There's been little excitement for the Golden Lions, but if you're desperate for hoops at noon on a Wednesday, at least there should be some scoring.

The Flames have been up and down to start the second season under head coach Rob Ehsan. They have yet to face a power-conference foe and have lost to the three best teams so far on their slate.

Eeking out a four-point win over lowly Chicago State also raised some alarm bells for a team that expected to compete in the top tier of the Missouri Valley Conference.

The good news — especially for bettors trying to get a sense of this team — is that the Flames have some very specific strengths and weaknesses to watch for in this game and beyond. UIC is in the top 15 in the country in earning free throws and nabbing offensive rebounds.

Guard Ahmad Henderson II leads the free-throw efforts, drawing 7.7 fouls per 40 minutes of play, powering his team-best 16.6 points per game.

On the other end of the floor, the Flames seem to forget how to rebound. UIC grabs 39.8% of its own misses but allows opponents to haul in 40% of missed field goals. Part of those issues stems from the shots the Flames allow.

Few teams in the nation are letting teams hoist more of their shots from long range than UIC. That's how the Flames let a mediocre Robert Morris team hit 15 deep balls in a blowout loss.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff vs. UIC Betting Analysis

If I thought Pine Bluff would be able to take advantage of UIC's defensive rebounding woes, I may be able to squint and see a pathway to the Golden Lions competing here.

That's not a strength for Pine Bluff, so my eyes look elsewhere for a key indicator.

In this case, it's UIC's openness to allowing opponents to hoist 3s. That's a bad option for this Pine Bluff team that's not built to beat teams from the outside.

The Golden Lions likely hoist and miss a ton of 3s, opening UIC to run away with this one.

I'll take the Flames to cover.

My Pick: UIC -19.5 or Better
