Boston College vs Duke College Basketball Betting Preview

This game is a massive outlier. Since 2010, there have only been five ACC games with a spread over 26 points. This is the second in just a few weeks after Duke laid 27.5 points against Georgia Tech.

To no one's surprise, this game now makes four of the six such games with Boston College — my alma mater — involved.

If you're looking for a glimmer of hope, the big favorites in those prior outings are just 1-4 ATS and Georgia Tech lost to Duke by just six.

Can Boston College continue the trend?

Boston College Basketball

It's the fifth year of the Earl Grant era at Boston College, and, like the two coaches who preceded him at BC, things are turning south in a hurry.

That's not to say things were ever looking up with Grant at the helm. He has just one winning record at Boston College, a 20-16 season in 2024. His teams have won just eight of their last 22 ACC games, failed to reach the ACC Tournament last season and are a sure bet to do so again this season.

Grant's Eagles have lost games to Central Connecticut, Dartmouth, Maine, New Hampshire, Tarleton State and Albany in the last five years.

This season's edition of Eagles is perhaps the most difficult to watch of the Grant era. Boston College ranks 274th in the nation in offensive efficiency. That would be the worst mark for an ACC team since Kevin Stallings led Pitt to a 0-18 conference record in 2018.

Boston College has scored 70 points in regulation just once in eight tries since New Year's Day, a loss to NC State. The Eagles have more games this season scoring under 0.8 points per possession (two) than over 1.2 points per possession (none).

Third-year guard Fred Payne leads the way in the scoring column, posting 15.1 points per game on 13.2 shot attempts. He has six games this season with more shots than points, including just two points in a 1-of-13 shooting effort at Georgia Tech.

Wingman Donald Hand is no better, scoring 14.4 points on 13 shots per game. He has five games with more shots than points to his name, as well.

These guys are both forcing shots because nothing is schemed open and nothing is easy. There's no space because the shooting on the perimeter is so dismal (344th in the country from 3-point land). Hand is taking six 3s per game and making just 22% of them.

Boston College doesn't rebound its misses particularly well. It doesn't attack the rim or draw fouls. The Eagles' offense is an eye-sore.

Duke Basketball

On the other hand, Duke is great. The Blue Devils rank in the top five of the country on both ends of the floor. They score in the paint, dominate the glass and defend every level. Duke's lone loss this season came by just one point, blowing a 17-point lead to Texas Tech at Madison Square Garden.

Duke is led by freshman phenom Cameron Boozer, son of Blue Devils legend Carlos Boozer. The projected lottery pick leads the ACC in scoring at 23.5 points per game, adding 9.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.8 steals every night. He's been dominating inside and out, with a crafty mid-range game between.

He's flanked by a cadre of capable secondary scorers, including his brother Cayden. Isaiah Evans is a perfect heat-up second option.

Caleb Foster has grown into a very polished lead guard, though the primary offensive creation role lies with Boozer.

That's smart given how well he's created for himself and others throughout Duke's dominant run, winning night after night in ACC games.

Boston College vs. Duke Betting Analysis

Can you squint and see a path to Boston College keeping this within the spread? I have a hard time doing so. Duke ranks 10th nationally in percentage of points allowed from outside the arc.

Boston College will work to find shots against this Duke defense, but it'll be relegated to contested jumpers or late-clock heaves.

Maybe this number is simply too high, and you like the trend I mentioned in the intro. Maybe you know Duke has half an eye on its trip to rival North Carolina on Saturday. I can't join you. I'll take Duke to jump out to an early, massive lead.

My Pick: Duke 1H ATS (Play to -15)
