Charleston Southern vs. UT Martin College Basketball Betting Preview
Charleston Southern Basketball
Charleston Southern was injury-riddled a season ago and won just 10 games. This season, the Buccaneers already have half the amount of wins in just nine games.
Basically, everything for Saah Nimley’s squad centers around the 3-point shot. The Bucs play fast (72nd in adjusted tempo) and shoot loads of 3s (49% of their shots come from deep while they connect on 36% of them).
Charleston Southern has a pair of outstanding guards. Brycen Blaine is third in points per game nationally at 23.3, and he also leads the Buccaneers in rebounds, assists and steals while shooting 41% from deep. The other is A’lahn Sumler, who averages 13.3 points a night and shoots 41% from deep.
It'll be very interesting to see what gives here. UT Martin has some turnover problems, but will Charleston Southern be able to take advantage? The Buccaneers have the lowest defensive turnover rate in America at just 11%.
Besides the lack of turnovers, nothing about the Buccaneers' defense is noticeably bad. They limit teams to 50% shooting from 2-point range, 30.3% from 3 and do a solid job on the defensive glass.
It'll come down to forcing the Skyhawks to make shots and not sending them to the foul line.
UT Martin Basketball
UT Martin is one of the surprising teams in college hoops. The Skyhawks snagged a pair of wins over Bradley and UNLV as close to 20-point favorites.
Head coach Jeremy Shulman offers a very modern approach to running offense, shooting a lot of 3s and finding ways to get to the foul line.
The Skyhawks attempt 3s on 48% of their field goals and connect on 36.7% of them. They also rank third in America in KenPom’s FTA/FGA metrics, only behind Buffalo and Iowa.
You’d probably expect a team with those numbers to be better than 271st in offensive efficiency.
So, what’s the issue? UT Martin has a 24.8% turnover rate, which ranks 363rd out of 365 teams.
UT Martin plays a slower tempo, so turning the ball over on a quarter of possessions is a big issue. It's crucial to maintain a fairly unsustainable free-throw rate.
Almost 50% of UT Martin’s scoring comes from three players: versatile forwards Andrija Bukumirovic and Matas Deniusas and guard Dragos Lungu. The pick-and-pop ability of Deniusas and Bukumirovic is arguably the biggest weapon for Coach Shulman.
Defensively, UT Martin is 206th in defensive efficiency. The Skyhawks' ability to defend the 3-point arc has been huge, as they're holding teams to 29.1% from 3.
On the flip side, the Skyhawks are bottom-20 nationally in defensive FTA/FGA.
A lot of this game will stem down to which team wins the free-throw battle.
Charleston Southern vs. UT Martin Betting Analysis
I'm taking the points with Charleston Southern.
UT Martin is a very fun story, but Charleston Southern is an equally great story. Blaine and Sumler are the wrecking crew that could ruin UT Martin's day.
To me, this game is more of a pick 'em, and I'll gladly take the points with the road team.
My Pick: Charleston Southern +4.5 (Play to +3)
