Toledo vs. Marshall
By Evan Abrams
This mid-afternoon matchup may not be the best on the college basketball slate, but it's arguably the best value on the board.
My Bet Labs Sports Insights "Bad Expectation Favorites" system says that Marshall -2.5 is the play for this affair.
In fact, this system owns a 4% return on investment (ROI) all-time and has posted a 2-1 record so far this season.
This system focuses on early season college basketball favorites that underperformed expectations the year before.
These teams typically won games outright but failed to cover spreads, leading bettors to view them as unreliable favorites.
The market often reacts by undervaluing them at the start of the new season, creating opportunity in games one through nine when rosters have matured and preseason adjustments take hold.
By limiting to spreads inside 10 points, the focus stays on competitive matchups where talent can outweigh perception.
These teams usually return enough production to remain strong straight-up, but now carry lighter betting pressure and more realistic lines.
In essence, "Bad Expectation Favorites" are teams that disappointed gamblers last season but have corrected their market price early, offering value before the betting public catches up.
Pick: Marshall -2.5
San Diego State vs. Colorado
By Sean Paul
Colorado began its year by crushing Abilene Christian, 94-59. That’s a great sight for veteran HC Tad Boyle, as most of last year's team hit the transfer portal.
On the flip side, you can lock Brian Dutcher in for 20+ wins every season. In fact, the Aztecs won 22+ games in all of Dutcher's seasons as HC, dating back to 2018.
This isn't the same SDSU team, though. Dutcher adjusted his style, which very few coaches would do after winning 20+ games every season. The Aztecs began playing faster last year, jumping from 245th in adjusted tempo to 104th.
Still, it ranked just 99th in offensive efficiency. A faster offense doesn't always mean a better offense.
This year, I am optimistic about SDSU being a good offense. It scored 102 points on 1.25 PPP in the season-opening win over Cal State Fullerton.
Although SDSU struggled defensively against Cal State Fullerton, I expect Dutcher to get them on track. It's not a lack of talent thing; it's that Fullerton plays fast and SDSU just wasn't locked in on that end.
Dutcher, being the defensive tactician that he is, I expect them to bounce back.
Give me SDSU.
Pick: San Diego State -2.5 (Play to -4)
Providence vs. Nebraska
By Ryan Minion
We are in for a phenomenal matchup on Saturday night as Providence and Nebraska get ready to square off in a Hall of Fame Tip-Off showdown at Mohegan Sun.
Though Saturday’s matchup will evidently be played at a neutral site, the Friar Fanatics typically travel very well, and I expect Providence to have a slight crowd advantage, which could definitely be a difference-maker in a closely contested matchup.
The Cornhuskers undoubtedly looked impressive on opening night, but I'm extremely high on this Providence team after a significant influx of talent via the transfer portal in Bryan Hodgson’s first year at the helm.
I definitely think Nebraska’s 2.5-point line is somewhat fair considering how well Fred Hoiberg’s bunch performed in last year’s NCAA Tournament. I just think the Friars are catching too many points in a game I would price closer to a “pick’em."
I feel confident backing Providence +2.5 in what should be an extremely entertaining game for all 40 minutes.
Pick: Providence +2.5
