George Washington vs Fordham College Basketball Betting Preview
George Washington Basketball
George Washington enters the Atlantic 10 Tournament as the fifth seed after Chris Caputo’s bunch recorded a 17-14 overall record during the regular season.
I think 3-point shooting prowess will be vital in this first round A-10 matchup. George Washington has the 60th-most efficient offense in college basketball and loves to fire from beyond the arc, ranking 40th nationally with a 46.2% 3-point rate this season, per Bart Torvik.
On the other end of the floor, the Revolutionaries boast a rather dreadful perimeter defense that's caused the team problems all season long.
Fortunately, George Washington draws a Fordham bunch that struggles on the offensive end of the floor, and relies far too heavily on points inside the paint.
Fordham Basketball
While it's five-point dogs in this one, Fordham received the fourth-seed in the A-10 Tournament.
The Rams are certainly stout defensively, but when it comes to the team’s efficiency on the offensive end of the floor, Fordham ranks 270th nationally, per Bart Torvik.
Fordham’s offense plays at a sluggish pace (330th) and operates most of its sets in the half-court, while largely looking for open looks in the paint.
While George Washington’s offense is far superior to its defense, the Revolutionaries have had far more difficulty containing points from beyond the perimeter, as opposed to its 2-point defense.
According to Bart Torvik, Fordham ranks 356th in college basketball in 3-point field goal percentage, which largely minimizes the biggest hole in Caputo’s defensive unit.
For a George Washington defensive frontcourt that's been rather solid protecting the rim this season, it draws an excellent matchup with a Rams bunch incapable of generating consistent offensive production from downtown.
George Washington vs Fordham Pick, Betting Analysis
Though Fordham was victorious on the road in the first meeting between these A-10 rivals, George Washington has made vast improvements on both ends of the floor.
The revenge angle is one of many reasons I favor the Revolutionaries in the second meeting.
A deeper analysis into Bart Torvik efficiency metrics reveals that the Rams are gonna have difficulty putting points on the board given their lackluster 3-point shooting efforts.
George Washington’s interior defense has made tremendous strides, and if it's to jump out to an early lead on Thursday afternoon, the Rams’ offense could be forced to operate at a far quicker pace than it would like, and to ultimately force shots earlier in the shot clock.
I suspect that George Washington’s significant edge on the offensive end of the floor — in combination with Fordham’s lack of versatile scoring avenues — to be the headline in this Atlantic 10 clash.
While defense has been an issue for the Revolutionaries for most of the season, their incompetence defending the perimeter will be substantially minimized, giving George Washington a major edge in this one.
I feel comfortable backing George Washington on the moneyline, and I'll combine it with Seton Hall's moneyline vs. Creighton.
