Kennesaw State vs Gonzaga College Basketball Betting Preview
Kennesaw State Basketball
The Owls emerged from the Conference-USA Tournament after finishing sixth in the conference.
The CUSA tourney was chaos, with the top three seeds combining to win just one game. Kennesaw State took advantage, sneaking to a second NCAA Tournament in four years.
The Owls rebounded after losing five of seven games immediately following Simeon Cottle's departure, who was charged as part of the gambling scandal that rocked college hoops earlier this year. Cottle was a 20-point-per-game scorer, leaving Kennesaw State scrambling to replace his production.
It's been a shared effort, with a different Owl leading the scoring column in each of the past five games.
One thing to be ready for when tuning into a Kennesaw State game: free throws. The Owls took the most free throws of any team in college basketball, while also allowing the second-most foul shot attempts by opponents. Both Kennesaw State and its foes fired exactly 918 freebies, good for 27 per game on each end.
That is the product of some good old-fashioned downhill attacking, with an eye for contact. At times, it was ugly. The Owls had 16% of their 2-point attempts blocked in Conference USA games.
Gonzaga Basketball
Mark Few is back in the NCAA Tournament with a top-three seed, his eighth such season since 2013. Few's Zags have lost four or fewer games in a season (as this team will) 12 times since he took over in 2000.
This Gonzaga team shares some characteristics with prior Bulldog teams, yet is also unique.
Few built a roster that is both incredibly experienced and incredibly deep. He plays his bench players 42% of Gonzaga's minutes, 13th most nationally. When healthy, Few's second five were as dynamic as any set of subs in the country.
This team is not currently at full health. Braden Huff, good for 18 points per game, is sidelined until at least the Sweet 16.
But Gonzaga's experience is unmatched. Other than two freshmen in the rotation, every other Zag likely to see the floor in this game is at least 21 years old, with four players in their fifth collegiate year.
The Zags use size and experience to win on the interior. Only two teams in college basketball scored more of their points on 2-point buckets than the Zags, with over 60% of Gonzaga's points scored on 2s.
A ton of that comes via the post-up, mainly from Ike with Huff sidelined.
Per Hoop-Explorer, Gonzaga posts up at the 97th percentile nationally, mostly because the Zags score 1.08 points per post-up, which ranks in the 99th percentile.
All of the Zags' success comes from their bigs. Gonzaga scores at the 94th percentile or better on screen and roll actions, high-lows, and offensive putbacks.
When the Zags can run, they look for an easy bucket. When slowed down, the ball is going inside.
Kennesaw State vs. Gonzaga Pick, Betting Analysis
Given Kennesaw State's issues with fouls and Gonzaga's love of scoring inside, you'd think that makes for an easy pick here.
The Zags will likely toss the ball down to the block, where the Owls foul the big men, and the Bulldogs pull away.
It's important to remember that Gonzaga's success on the interior hasn't included trips to the line. The Zags rank 281st in free-throw rate. Ike gets tons of post-up looks but shoots under five free throws per game.
Kennesaw State actually ranked in the top 30 for the lowest 2-point shooting percentage in the country.
That feels more like quirks in the stats than what we'll see in reality. When push comes to shove, Kennesaw State doesn't have the size to slow down Gonzaga, even with Huff stuck sidelined.
The Owls might hang around early — notable for "Race to" and first half bets — but the Bulldogs should eventually overwhelm them inside.
My Pick: Gonzaga -21.5
