La Salle vs Davidson College Basketball Betting Preview

La Salle Basketball

The Explorers looked to be turning a corner toward competitiveness, covering three straight games against VCUDuquesne, and Rhode Island.

But injuries have continued to decimate La Salle, and it got shelled by George Washington on Tuesday by 27 points.

Head coach Darris Nichols has used a ridiculous 21 different starting lineups in his team’s 28 games.

La Salle just doesn’t have the bodies right now to stay competitive. Jaeden Marshall, Jerome Brewer, and Josiah Harris — three opening day starters — missed the last game, completely decimating the Explorers on both ends of the floor.

Offense was an issue for La Salle already, as it ranks as the A-10’s second-worst attack on this end.

The Explorers' only viable route to score against a good Davidson defense will be the offensive glass. They're among the worst rim finishing teams in the nation (359th nationally in field goal percentage) and can’t take advantage of the Wildcats’ “softer” middle.

Nichols will try to keep this game in the halfcourt and limit possessions, which Davidson should oblige. Without Harris’ post play, the offense will run through Rob Dockery, who can shoot as many times as he wants. He had a 34% usage rate against GW last game, scoring 25 points on 7-for-12 shooting.

Davidson Basketball

Davidson has been so-so lately by its standards, going 3-7 against the number over the past ten games. The Wildcats are fighting for the five-seed in the A-10 Tournament (though dropping to the six-seed allows them to avoid Dayton and Saint Louis… hmm).

Davidson is rock solid everywhere on defense, outside of that slight paint softness. This year’s squad is Matt McKillop’s best defensive squad of his four-year tenure and the school’s first top 100 KenPom defense since 2019.

On offense, Davidson is primarily a 3-point attack, ranking in the top five in the A-10 in both attempt rate and percentage.

The Cats like to play in the halfcourt like La Salle, running offense through Josh Scovens in the post and running shooters like Roberts Blums, Parker Friedrichsen, and Sam Brown off dribble hand-offs and off-ball screens.

Their motion offense should be efficient against a below-average La Salle defense that is a sieve at the rim and is just so-so defending the triple. Nichols will likely mix in some zone on this end to further muck up the game and hide his depth issues, but Davidson’s shooting ability should be able to counter.

The Wildcats should force La Salle into plenty of turnovers – the Explorers coughed up the rock 14 times against GW, a team that ranks close to Davidson in turnover rate.

La Salle vs. Davidson Betting Analysis

La Salle-Davidson won’t be the most exciting matchup of the 23-game Sunday slate.

But we can still bet on it!

This spread is large for a game that could play around 60 possessions. The Cats have proven they can win by a margin against the dregs of the A-10, but La Salle is scrappy.

With Brewer’s latest injury, leaving the Explorers down three starters (and six total players done for the season), Davidson should be able to slowly extend with 3s and suffocating defense over a full 40 minutes.

My Pick: Davidson -10.5
