Louisville Basketball

The Louisville Cardinals are off to a 7-0 start, including victories over old rivals Kentucky and Cincinnati. They'll have the chance to pick up two more quality wins against Arkansas and Indiana this week.

The Cardinals will head to Fayetteville with the nation's No. 4 scoring offense at 96.7 points per game. They've scored 96 points or more in five of their first seven games.

Under head coach Pat Kelsey, the Cardinals want to get up and down and take a ton of 3-pointers. They have the 12th-shortest average possession length (14.8 seconds) offensively while ranking second in Division I in 3-pointers and fourth in attempts.

Louisville has gotten 41% of its points from beyond the arc this season.

Five-star freshman point guard Mikel Brown Jr. has more than lived up to the billing thus far as he's averaging 17 points and six assists per game this season. That's despite shooting just 30% from 3 on seven attempts per game, though I would expect that to rise before too long.

Both Ryan Conwell and Isaac McKneely are shooting 43% or better from 3 on eight attempts per game. Conwell leads the team at 20.1 points per game to go along with 5.4 rebounds.

While Conwell, Brown and McKneely have led the offense from the perimeter, Kelsey has a three-man rotation of Sananda Fru, Aly Khalifa and Khani Rooths in the post.

Fru is averaging 10 points, six rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game in 20 minutes. He's converting 76% of his 2-pointers and gives the team a strong lob threat and defensive anchor.

The Cardinals are top-10 in Division I in 2-point percentage defense and effective field goal percentage defense. They're also 20th in defensive rebounding percentage. They're fifth in Division I with 46 rebounds per game and are outrebounding opponents by 12.7 per game.

Arkansas Basketball

Arkansas has played two games against high-major competition already, losing to Michigan State 68-66 in East Lansing and Duke 80-71 in Chicago. It's undefeated at home this season, but it also needed to escape with narrow victories over Samford and Winthrop.

You can usually expect a John Calipari-coached team to have high-level guard play. This season, five-star freshmen Meleek Thomas and Darius Acuff Jr. assume the mantle, as they're each averaging over 17 points per game.

Acuff is shooting 45% from 3 as well and figures to be highly motivated for a matchup against Brown. They may be the first two point guards selected in next June's NBA draft.

Like Louisville, Arkansas wants to play with pace — 26th in shortest average possession length offensively — but it's less reliant on 3s, except Acuff. Nearly half of the Razorbacks' points come from inside the arc, as do over 60% of their field goal attempts.

At 6-foot-10, Trevon Brazile gives the team a versatile inside-out threat as a career 35% 3-point shooter. He's averaging career-highs with 12.7 points and 7.7 rebounds in addition to 1.7 blocks per game. He's also coming off a double-double against Duke.

He's the only Razorback averaging over six rebounds per game, but the team is outside the top 100 in rebounding percentage on both ends of the floor. That's an area Louisville will likely look to exploit.

Arkansas protects the ball extremely well — particularly for having freshmen guards — as it ranks 14th in turnover percentage. However, it's also forcing only 12 turnovers per game and ranks 237th in turnover percentage defensively.

Despite that, it enters Wednesday's game 35th in adjusted defensive efficiency.

Louisville vs. Arkansas Betting Analysis

At Memphis and Kentucky, Calipari had a lot of success against Louisville, and he enters this matchup with a 19-8 record against the program.

However, this time, Louisville should have the advantage.

Led by the nation's No. 2 offense in adjusted offensive efficiency, Louisville will have the advantage at both ends of the floor. It'll have a decided edge on the glass, where it's punished opponents this season.

While this will be only Louisville's second test away from home, it's proven it can get the job done (10-point victory in Cincinnati). The Cardinals are 5-2 against the spread this season, and I'll be backing them for another cover on Wednesday.

My Pick: Louisville -3.5 (Play to -4.5)
