Maryland vs Alabama College Basketball Betting Preview
Alabama has already lost two games this season. To put that into perspective, the Crimson Tide didn't suffer their second loss last season until January 11.
One constant for the Tide under Nate Oats is how they move the basketball through up-tempo, quick-possession play. They rank seventh in the nation in adjusted tempo, ninth in average possession length and 39th in effective field goal percentage.
Alabama holds the ball for an average of just 14.2 seconds before getting a shot up — a massive contrast to Maryland’s preferred offensive style.
Fast-paced teams often turn the ball over, but Alabama has done a nice job avoiding that trap. The Tide rank 27th nationally in offensive turnovers and 13th in non-steal turnovers.
Bama's two losses this season came to KenPom's No. 1 and No. 2 teams, Gonzaga and Purdue. The Tide's biggest flaw has been an inability to force turnovers, ranking 333rd in the country.
Maryland, however, might be the perfect remedy for Alabama's defensive weakness. The Terps are extremely careless with the ball, ranking 286th in turnovers and coughing it up on just over 20% of their offensive possessions.
Alabama is better in virtually every offensive scoring metric, raising real concerns about whether Maryland can keep pace — both literally and figuratively.
While the Crimson Tide love to get out in transition, Maryland will try to slow the game down. That becomes a problem if it falls behind early, which we expect.
Bama's pace will create a game flow that makes Maryland uncomfortable. I'll lay this number if we can get anything under -13.
My Pick: Alabama -12.5
