Miami vs Florida College Basketball Preview
Miami Basketball
Welcome to year two of the Jai Lucas experience.
Year one was a very successful start for the first-year head coach. The Hurricanes went 26-9, finished third in the ACC, and ended the season ranked No. 24.
That 19-win improvement from their 7-10 record in 2024-25 — including a 3-17 conference record — is an incredible job by Lucas in getting this program back to relevance.
This season, Lucas returns just three players from a year ago, none of whom were starters. However, the Hurricanes bring in nine new faces. The most notable additions this offseason are DeSean Goode and Acaden Lewis.
Goode is coming over from Robert Morris, where he shot nearly 63% from the floor and more than 57% from deep. Lewis is transferring from Villanova, where he averaged 12.2 points per game and 5.3 assists per game.
The Hurricanes should be in for yet another successful season under Lucas. It will be interesting to see how this new group gels and whether it can take an even bigger step forward.
Florida Basketball
The Gators enter the 2026-27 college basketball season with high aspirations, just two years removed from their first national championship since winning back-to-back titles in the mid-2000s.
The Gators not only find themselves ranked No. 1 in the country, but they're also near the top of plenty of people's betting portfolios to win it all.
Returning starter Thomas Haugh is calling this season a championship-or-bust campaign. Somebody better tell Haugh that it better be. Florida is second in preseason odds to win it all, trailing only Duke.
Todd Golden has brought back 11 players from last year. Most importantly, he returns his No. 1 rebounding frontcourt from last season, featuring Haugh, Rueben Chinyelu and Alex Condon. The trio also accounted for nearly half of Florida's scoring a year ago.
This team will be a powerhouse again. Get ready to back the Gators a lot this season, and get used to chomping once again.
Miami vs. Florida Pick, Betting Analysis
There's nothing sexier than finding out a college program is bringing back a boatload of players in this day and age, when guys will leave for better pay, playing time or simply a better personal fit.
So, when Golden returns 11 players, it speaks volumes about the program he has built and the belief this group has in him.
On the other side, Miami added nine new players to its roster this offseason while returning just three. This will mark Lucas' second season with the program. Given how early he is in his tenure, it is no surprise he is bringing in new faces as he continues to lay the foundation for the program.
With so much familiarity and experience surrounding the Gators' roster, it is hard to overlook that advantage in this matchup — especially when Florida has six seniors and three juniors, while Miami has just seven combined.
Early in the season, I typically lean toward familiarity rather than hoping and praying a fresh roster gels right out of the gate.
Pick: Florida -5.5 (Play to -8.5)
